Over the last six , we have looked at threats to Ontario's turtle populations and provided resources on how to help. It is up to all of us to protect Ontario’s native turtle species. Remember to drive with extra caution between April and October when turtles are on the move, especially during the May/June nesting season.

If you come across turtles at one of RRCA’s three Conservation Areas, consider sharing your observations with us using the iNaturalist.org mobile app. Please remember to enjoy these amazing creatures from a distance.

Thinking of getting a pet ? Think again. Pet turtles are a serious commitment and very difficult to care for, with complex dietary and lighting requirements.

The most common species sold as a pet, the red-eared slider, is non-native and can live for over 40 years. When full-grown, they require a large pond, not just the tiny aquarium you bought when it was just a hatchling. Never release non-native turtles into the wild, as they can spread disease and compete with native species.

Bringing home a wild turtle as a pet is not a good idea either! Illegal turtle poaching for the pet trade has had a serious negative impact on native turtle populations in Ontario.

💧 Public Consultation – New Drinking Water Protection Area

The Raisin–South Nation Source Protection Region has updated the drinking water protection area related to the new municipal well in Wi******er.

New mapping identifies vulnerable areas where drinking water source protection policies may apply to help protect the municipal groundwater aquifer from potential contamination and other drinking water threats.

Property owners, businesses, and community members are encouraged to review the updated maps and provide feedback as part of the public consultation process.
