The Cornwall Lunker Club was founded in 1985 with intent to attract those anglers interested in promoting and protecting our sport fisheries. The membership over the past 26 years has fluctuated from the original 7 to over 100 in the mid 1990’s, but no matter the numbers, the members have consistently involved themselves in the conservation and ecology of the area. In the years following the club
s formation funding totaling approximately $232,000.00 was received from the provincial Government to assist the Ministry of Natural Resources to complete fish & wildlife projects in the Cornwall management area. One such project involved the Hoople Creek walleye spawning bed where the existing spawning bed was increased to 5 times its original size and the eroding banks stabilized. This was all done using club labor. The project was a total success with the original population of approx. 1000 fish exploding to over 50,000 fish utilizing the site today. Many other projects from Gunn Canal, Wales Sanctuary, Upper Canada Bird Sanctuary, the Nation River and Sutherland Creek were completed. The fishing pier behind the R.C.A.F. building is the result of a $7,000.00 federal grant acquired by the club. The Guindon Park boat launch is also a result of a proposal researched and submitted by members of the club to the City of Cornwall. In the past 26 years members have remained active in the community by sitting on The Seaway Valley Tourist Bureau, the Remedial Action Plan Committee, the Fisheries Management Committee, Natural Heritage, etc. The Lunker Club remains involved with the OMNR and the Raisin River Conservation Authority to assist in collecting data on the state of our area environment. The Cornwall Lunker Club was also instrumental in initiating dialogue between local angling clubs and Akwesasne Mohawk traditional fishermen to discuss problems, concerns and possible solutions pertaining to the St.Lawrence watershed. We strive to continue our involvement for years to come to promote Cornwall as a desirable destination. Join us and help us in our cause.
