TRACKING ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE IN THE BURGEO REGION

The past several days provided us with an opportunity to engage with harvesters and others from the Burgeo region to provide updates on our research activities. Continuity is a critical component of scientific studies, as repeated monitoring supports multi-year trend analysis and enables the early detection of changes in marine environmental conditions. As such, also during this visit, we expanded our existing multiyear dataset by:
- completing additional water quality monitoring in fish-bearing waterways
- conducting marine vegetation surveys using underwater cameras and aerial drones
- deploying settlement plates to monitor for aquatic invasive species
- trapping of the invasive and ecologically destructive European green crab.

BURGEO - BUSY DAYS

We are thrilled to be back in Burgeo for what promises to be a few very busy and informative days. There will be some engaging discussions on conservation and tourism that we hope you will join (see below). We will also be continuing our multi-year research in the area - monitoring water quality, deploying aquatic invasive species settlement plates, trapping green crab, and conducting marine vegetation surveys.

OCEAN HERO JUNE 2026 - FINLEY MERCER

8 (soon be 9!) year old Finley has a deep passion for the great outdoors, especially the ocean. He lives in Port aux Basques and spends much of his summer in the town of Burgeo, where he takes part in the experimental green crab fishing alongside his dad and pop. He has developed an impressive knowledge of green crabs and can tell you just about everything there is to know about this invasive species.

Finley loves spending time on the water, whether he’s cod or mackerel fishing, picking mussels and winkles for a snack, or simply enjoying the ocean. He also enjoys walking beaches and shorelines, and he never misses an opportunity to help the environment by collecting bags of litter along the way.

Finley’s love for the ocean is reflected in everything he does. Whether he’s learning about marine life, helping protect the coastline, or making memories with his family on the water, his enthusiasm and appreciation for nature continue to grow. He believes there is no better place to be than out on the ocean, where every day brings a new adventure.

SKILLS TRAINING FOR FUTURE RESEARCH

Electrofishing is a highly efficient method for conducting scientific surveys of fish populations. A small electrical current is transmitted through the water, temporarily paralyzing fish, thereby enabling them to be studied more easily. The effect is temporary and does not harm the fish. It is also an effective means of collecting invasive species for removal from a waterway.

Our Research Manager has recently completed certification training in backpack electrofishing. We look forward to integrating this tool in our future research.

COLLABORATION = SUCCESS

Effective partnerships are essential to our operations, and we are committed to fostering meaningful collaborations with a diverse range of stakeholders. Local Harbour Authorities are key partners in this endeavor. A recent meeting with the Harbour Authority Association of Newfoundland and Labrador in Burin provided a valuable opportunity for in-depth discussions. We look forward to participating in their conference this fall as a guest speaker.

Looking for a fun and educational activity? The Newfoundland Insectarium is a favorite among visitors of all ages. Don’t miss the third floor exhibit, cohosted by ourselves and the Marine Institute, showcasing aquatic invasive species, including live green crab.

DOCUMENTING CHANGES IN EELGRASS ABUNDANCE

Forming meadows that act as a nursery for many juvenile fish, providing a natural buffer against erosion, and operating as a carbon sink, eelgrass serves critical roles in our marine environments.

With funding from DFO, and in partnership with Mi'kmaq Alsumk Mowimsikik Koqoey Association, we are engaged in a multi-year project mapping eelgrass meadows at 12 locations throughout Fortune Bay and Bay d’Espoir. Using a combination of underwater video, snorkel surveys, and drone aerial surveys we are able to document the presence and distribution, of this critical marine species. Repeating this work over multiple years allows us to document any changes in abundance.

While surveying each site we also document the species found inhabiting each meadow.

PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT - FOR OUR STUDENTS AND GENERATIONS TO COME

When asked to consider the implications of the 7 Generation Principle on environmental stewardship, Avery Noble adopted a comprehensive approach. Recognizing the interconnectedness of all environmental aspects, Avery's drawing reflected a holistic concern for our water, forests, and wildlife. He encouraged everyone to conserve energy, prevent pollution, and adopt sustainable practices.

Today, we virtually joined Avery's class at St. Peter's Primary in Mount Pearl to announce Avery as the winner of our annual environmental art contest at the primary level. He was rewarded with a new bicycle for his artwork efforts and environmental consciousness.

With young individuals like Avery demonstrating a profound understanding of and commitment to environmental conservation, it is our responsibility to protect the environment for his and future generations.
