The Nature Conservancy of Canada will host their 11th annual Sandy Point Beach Clean-up event on Saturday, September 20th! 🍃

Join them for a day on the beautiful beaches of an ecologically and culturally significant area. Take in the ocean scenery while you help clean marine debris and other garbage from Piping Plover critical nesting habitat. 🌊

Traditional Use Study – Call for Community Participation

Qalipu First Nation is conducting a Traditional Use Study (TUS) within the Newfound Gold Queensway North Project area in central Newfoundland. This study aims to gather knowledge about the land, waters, and resources our people have used for generations so that we may protect our traditional practices.

We are seeking input from community members who may have knowledge of:
- Traditional hunting, fishing, and gathering areas
- Cultural or ceremonial sites
- Travel routes (past and present)
- Stories or teachings connected to the land

Your knowledge is vital in helping us understand and document how these lands continue to hold meaning for our community, and to ensure that traditional values are respected in future planning and development.

All shared information will be respected, kept confidential, and only shared with your permission.

Together, we can ensure that our stories and connections to the land are carried forward.

Information Sharing! 🌿 Sensory Workshops: Nature, Art & Research 🌿

Sensory Workshops for Cultural Ecosystem Services & Spruce Budworm are taking place this September in Corner Brook and Gros Morne National Park.

These free, community-based events invite participants to connect with nature through guided hikes and sensory art-making, while contributing to a research project led by Memorial University.

🎨 What to Expect
- Guided hike
- Creative art-making activities
- Short questionnaire
- Optional FitBit heart-rate data collection

This project explores how environmental changes, like spruce budworm outbreaks, shape our experiences in nature.

Qalipu Environment and Natural Resources collects valuable data on both shore- and marine bird species, including the piping plover, great black backed gull, common and thick-billed murre, common and arctic tern, black guillemot, and many more! This data is shared and will aid in effective conservation efforts, particularly for species at risk.

Studying these birds is important because they are key indicators of ecosystem health, reflecting changes in fish stocks, pollution, and climate. Monitoring populations can help to identify declines and track the success of conservation actions. For instance, marine birds respond to oceanographic variability, so research can not only provide insight into environmental change, but guide sustainable fisheries, pollution response, and coastal protection. 🌊

QENR staff are trained in beach and nest surveys, bird-banding, and seabird observation. This knowledge and experience is highly valuable and applied to our projects involving bird species.

A team of researchers and land guardians led by members of the Qalipu First Nation and Dr. Yolanda Wiersma, Department of Biology, Memorial University of Newfoundland, is uncovering secrets of ecological and cultural importance in Charlie’s Place – situated in the Gander Lake area in Central Newfoundland. 🌲

Using a 'two-eyed seeing' approach, the team has documented 175 species of lichens not previously documented in the region, including several new to the province — and even one new to Canada. They have also found evidence of longstanding Indigenous ties to the land.

Do you have ties to the southwest coast of Newfoundland and feel open to sharing stories, experiences, history, culture, and/or relationship to the land and waters of this region?

Qalipu Environment and Natural Resources is looking for people who are open to sharing practices and/or memories of fishing, berry picking, hunting, trapping, locations of importance, cultural practices and relationships, archeological findings, family history, and anything you feel compelled to share. This information will be used to highlight the importance of these areas to better inform decision-making.

Over the next few weeks we will be sharing information regarding the proposed South Coast Fjords National Marine Conservation Area (NMCA) 🌊

We're focusing on some common misconceptions you may have heard, and aiming to set the record straight on these.

❌ A misconception you may have heard is “fishing is not allowed”

✅ NMCAs are designed to support current livelihoods, which includes commercial fishing, local tourism, research, and recreation. However, bottom trawling and mining are prohibited under the Canada National Marine Conservation Act, but most fishing activities remain the same. Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) will continue to manage fisheries within the NMCA.

Every June, the Piping Plover Index Count provides critical insight into the status of this endangered shorebird by tracking breeding pairs across the Atlantic region. The 2025 count was held from June 1st to 9th, with encouraging results and an unexpected highlight.
