Western Regional Hospital Foundation

The Foundation is committed to ensuring that all residents of Western NL have access to the latest medical technology for the highest level of healthcare.

Through the Foundation, individuals, businesses, schools, service clubs and community organizations help to improve the quality of our healthcare services. Your donations, bequests, planned giving and special event proceeds are applied to priority items for the Western Region or can be directed to specific equipment or departments. The Regional Foundation welcomes all contributions; we welcome and

graciously accept your gifts as offerings that make an unbelievable contribution to the healthcare of our region. Every gift of support, big or small, makes considerable improvements to the health and welfare of our friends and families in the Western Region. Your action and participation is what is so essential. The Foundation graciously accepts any and all donations and issues official income tax receipts for contributions over $5.00. The Western Regional Hospital Foundation has its own separate entity with the Board of Directors elected from the community.

We would like to recognize another hero in healthcare who was presented with a Guardian Angel award recently! The Guardian Angel program celebrates those who have made a significant difference in the lives of their patients, often going above and beyond the call of duty.

Dr. Christo Taylor was recognized for his service to the surgery program recently and was presented with a Guardian Angel Award from the WRH Foundation.

Dr. Taylor's nominator shared their experience and gratitude with us as follows: "Dr. Taylor, for decades, you have served with skill, innovation, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to patient care. You have been a trusted and invaluable surgical assistant - always dependable, willing to help, and prepared to stay until the work is done. Bringing Point-of-Care Ultrasound Skills to the West Coast!

The Western Regional Hospital Foundation is proud to support the next generation of healthcare providers with the recent purchase of two point-of-care ultrasound (PoCUS) machines, along with two portable Butterfly probes and tablets.

These new tools were recently put into action during a PoCUS scanning event with the Western Stream Family Medicine Residency Program (WestFam). R1 and R2 residents had the opportunity to develop their hands-on scanning skills under the guidance of Dr. Brittany Bolt, ER physician and WestFam alum.

So, why does PoCUS matter?

Point-of-care ultrasound provides healthcare providers with valuable, real-time information that can help with assessing and treating patients, particularly in emergency situations. It also offers medical students, residents and staff the opportunity to gain practical experience and work toward PoCUS certification.

This skill can be especially valuable in rural and remote communities, where access to other diagnostic tests and imaging may be limited.

We’re thrilled to help create more opportunities for learning, training and skill development right here in Western Newfoundland.

A big thank you to WestFam for putting these machines to work and for your commitment to advancing PoCUS skills and, ultimately, improving patient care!

We would like to recognize another hero in healthcare who was presented with her third Guardian Angel award recently! The Guardian Angel program celebrates those who have made a significant difference in the lives of their patients, often going above and beyond the call of duty.

Dr. Shanda Slipp was recognized for her phenomenal work recently and was presented with a Guardian Angel Award from the WRH Foundation!

Dr. Slipp's nominator shared their experience and gratitude with us as follows: "Dr. Slipp, your professionalism, kindness, empathy and thoughtfulness go above and beyond the call of duty. Yesterday's garden party at the Corner Brook Long Term Care Therapeutic Garden was a beautiful reminder of the lasting impact generosity can have.

Made possible through a generous legacy gift from Edith and Bob Skinner, this special space has become so much more than a garden. It features a work shed, a stage for live musical entertainment, raised planters where residents can grow flowers and vegetables, a wheelchair-accessible swing, and a circular walking path with meaningful accents that help spark memories and conversation.

With the sun shining, burgers sizzling on the BBQ (cooked with love by the staff of CBLTC), and live music filling the air, residents gathered to sing along and simply enjoy being together outdoors. The fresh air, the smiles, and the sense of community made it an uplifting experience just to take a walk through this beautiful space.

Seeing the joy on residents' faces was every bit as refreshing for those attending as it was for the residents themselves. It's a powerful reminder that thoughtful spaces can bring comfort, connection, purpose, and moments of happiness every single day.

The legacy of Edith and Bob Skinner continues to grow in every flower planted, every song shared, and every memory made in this remarkable garden. Their generosity will touch the lives of residents for generations to come.

Today was one of those days that reminded me just how fortunate I am to do the work that I do.

Our staff, Board of Directors, and the Senior Management Team of Western Zone had the privilege of celebrating an extraordinary family whose dedication, generosity, and compassion have made a lasting impact on our community.

Please let me introduce the Strowbridge Langer family!

Through countless hours of working together to host yard sales, auctions, dances and multiple ticket draws, this remarkable family has raised an incredible $100,000 for the WRH Foundation!

Their gift has funded the purchase of Cuddle Beds for our Palliative Care Unit, a meaningful addition that allows loved ones to remain close during some of life's most difficult moments.

A cuddle bed may seem like a simple piece of equipment, but its impact is immeasurable. It provides comfort, connection, and the opportunity for families to hold hands, share stories, and simply be together during a loved one's palliative journey. These precious moments become cherished memories, and the families who use these beds are deeply grateful for the comfort they provide.

Today, as we celebrated this milestone, we were reminded that philanthropy is about so much more than dollars raised. It is about kindness, compassion, and a commitment to making life a little easier for others when they need it most.
