Hoy - Scott Watershed Society

Hoy - Scott Watershed Society We have been a registered society from 2002 until the present time. HSWS supports one of the most significant sub-watersheds in the Coquitlam River watershed.

Hoy / Scott Watershed Society is a non-profit group that runs a small salmon hatchery, and conducts a salmon enhancement program in Coquitlam, BC, Canada under the guidance of the Department of Fisheries & Oceans and with the help of the City of Coquitlam Hoy - Scott Watershed Society,(HSWS) is a volunteer run society that operates a small salmon hatchery at Hoy Creek, and conducts a salmon enhanc

ement program in partnership with the City of Coquitlam, and technical expertise from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada,(DFO). With help from DFO, the City of Coquitlam, Coquitlam Optimists, and volunteers the old trout rearing facility on the Frederick Brewer property was restored in 1995, and Coho from the Port Coquitlam Hunting and Fishing Club hatchery were placed in it on July 1995, a metal dumpster was used to store the equipment needed until the hatchery building was completed in 1997. In addition, we steward the Hoy and Scott Watershed, promote watershed restoration, public awareness, education and preservation. The group regularly conducts creek and riparian restoration, and is politically active with respect to local environmental issues. Our volunteers have a wide variety of backgrounds, which assist in the operation of the group. Throughout the years, by creating public awareness with the community about urban activities that interfere with salmon habitat, we believe our society has served as a benefit to our local environment. We are involved with improving salmon habitat, and protecting the natural beauty of Hoy and Scott creeks, that so many residents, local and abroad, rely on for recreation. β˜€οΈπŸŸ It was a hot one out there today, and with summer just around the corner, our dedicated volunteers continue to make a difference!

There was plenty to do this morning as volunteers rolled up their sleeves to give some much-needed TLC to the wooden Hoy Creek Trail entry city sign at one of our trailheads, tackle hatchery maintenance and equipment cleaning, and care for our growing Coho salmon fry.

From maintaining our facilities to supporting the next generation of wild salmon, every task plays an important role in protecting and enhancing the Hoy Creek watershed.

A big thank you to all of our volunteers for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to the watershedβ€”even on the hottest days! πŸ’™

πŸŽ‰ Congratulations to our Volunteer of the Month, Kevin Elliott!

For the past three years, Kevin has helped raise the next generation of salmon as one of our dedicated daily fish feeders at the Hoy Creek Hatchery. His commitment to conservation, watershed stewardship, and community service helps make our work possible.

Thank you, Kevin, for everything you do for the salmon, the hatchery, and our community! πŸŸπŸ’™

Saturday's recap from the Hoy Creek Hatchery! 🌟

Our team completed weight sampling of this year’s Coho fry as we prepare for the upcoming June fin clip. Volunteers also focused on trail cleanup, removing invasives and clearing obstructing plants throughout the watershed.

Even more exciting β€” the wildflower seeds planted behind the hatchery are beginning to pop up! 🌱🌼

We also said farewell to volunteer Jiameng. Thank you for all of your hard work and service to the hatchery and watershed community. Your contributions are truly appreciated, and we wish you all the best in your next chapter! πŸ’™πŸŸ

Another busy and productive Saturday at the hatchery and along the creek! 🌿🐟

Our amazing Hoy/Scott Watershed Society volunteers were hard at work completing a coho fry weight sampling project β€” involving careful measurements, calculations, feed weight analysis, and lots of math to help monitor the health and growth of our young salmon.

The team also filled tree watering bags to help our plantings survive the dry weather ahead, spotted tiny fish in the back channel, and headed down the trail to clean signs and trim back vegetation blocking pathways and visibility.

It’s all part of the ongoing work to care for Hoy Creek and its ecosystem β€” from salmon habitat to trails and native plants. Thank you to every volunteer who gives their time, energy, and passion to this important work. We couldn’t do it without you! πŸ’š

A warm welcome to new volunteers Maddison and Peter β€” great to have you join the team! πŸ‘‹

Today’s work included tackling invasive species throughout the hatchery and trail areas, including:
β€’ English Ivy
β€’ Lamium
β€’ Laurel
β€’ Emerging Morning Glory

Our volunteers cut back and rooted out invasives to help protect native habitat along the watershed. 🌱

With warmer weather on the way, the pond aerators have now been prepped and are ready for the season ahead. β˜€οΈπŸ’§

We also assembled our brand-new display tent, which will be making appearances at upcoming community events and outreach activities!

To top it all off, volunteers are excited and gearing up for upcoming Streamkeepers training as we continue building knowledge and stewardship skills within the community.

Thanks to everyone who came out to help care for Hoy Creek! πŸ’™
