Manuels River Community Inc. volunteers led another great river tour today. Many thanks to Rod Taylor and Jill Currie for your knowledge abd leadership. MR1 made an appearance to everyone's delight and then we did some time at the fossil site and found this little beauty!

🌿 What Has MRCI Been Up To? 🌿

Since transferring ownership of the Manuels River Hibernia Interpretation Centre to the Town of Conception Bay South in 2024, Manuels River Community Inc. (MRCI) has continued its mission as a volunteer-based charity dedicated to sustainability, wellness, and lifelong learning.

With no paid staff, everything we do is made possible by our amazing volunteers! ❤️

Over the past year and a half, we've been rebuilding as an operational board and delivering programs that make a difference in our community:

🔬 Young Scientist Sessions Our winter sessions on Slime, Fossils, Dinosaurs, and Light filled up quickly and were a huge hit with children and parents alike.

🌲 Hug a Tree and Survive Outside In partnership with Central Avalon Search and Rescue, we offered AdventureSmart programs that teach children how to stay safe outdoors.

🦕 Welcoming Johns Hopkins University Students We were thrilled to host a group of geology students from Maryland who visited Manuels River as part of their province-wide geo-tour. Stay tuned for a possible online presentation this fall about their Newfoundland and Labrador adventure!

🚶‍♀️ Family River Tours Throughout the summer, families have been exploring the geology, biology, and world-famous fossils of Manuels River with our volunteer guides.

Join Dr. Rod Taylor for a guided walk on Manuels River, where we will discuss the geology, biology, and paleontology of the river system. We'll even have a visit to its world-famous fossil site; hopefully we'll find some 500-million-year-old treasures! Our tour will take place on Sunday, August 9, 2026 at the Manuels River Centre, 7 Conception Bay Highway at 10 am. Cost is $5 per person. Children under 5 are free.
This tour is suitable for all ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please register using the link below as we limit the number to allow people to interact with the facilitators and the fossil site.

This Week in the News - 1876! On June 15, 1876 The Morning Chronicle announced the publication of The Geography of Newfoundland by James P. Howley. Having worked on the Newfoundland Geological Survey, Howley saw the need for an up-to-date textbook on the geography of Newfoundland. This book was the result of Howley's efforts, and became a standard text that was used for many years in schools on the island. Another great Hug a Tree and Survive Outside session tonight at the Manuels River Centre with the Central Avalon Ground Search and Rescue team. With school letting out, camping in new places, trips to cabins and berry picking soon - there is no better time to teach our little ones what they need to know if they take a wrong turn. The kids were delighted with their take away bags and with Christine and Ray as their instructors. Thank you to the CAGSAR volunteers for all that you do to support the community, prevent issues and always being there to respond when you get the call. We will run this session as many times as there is interest because if even one child is safer, it is worth it! And if your child has already done it feel free to do it again.
