🐟🎥 Big shoutout to our partners in conservation Georgian Bay Forever!

We couldn’t keep our In-School Hatchery Program going without their incredible support. Their latest contribution, a new camera at our hatchery, means students can now live stream their fish and continue watching them grow long after they leave the classroom!

The journey begins after Christmas break when students receive brook trout eggs and raise them in their classrooms throughout the school year. When summer arrives, the fish come back to our hatchery, where we help them grow for another year.

Then the students come back to finish what they started, helping us release those trout into local tributaries. 🐟🌊
Now they can stay connected to their fish every step of the way.

And most importantly, support organizations like Georgian Bay Forever that invest in hands-on conservation and help us give the next generation a real connection to our local waters.

Should Future Trout Derbies Move to Catch and Release?

With fish stocks declining in many areas and angling pressure increasing through social media, online fishing groups, and the widespread sharing of fishing techniques and productive locations, should we be considering a shift toward catch-and-release trout derbies?

Many anglers today are far more effective than they were a decade ago. Information travels quickly, and once-hidden spots can become heavily pressured almost overnight. As a result, some fisheries are feeling the impact.

A catch-and-release format could help reduce harvest pressure while still allowing anglers to enjoy the competition, camaraderie, and challenge that make derbies so popular. At the same time, others may argue that harvesting a legal fish is a traditional part of fishing and that properly managed fisheries can support limited harvest.

I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts:

•Should future trout derbies be catch and release only? ( Keep fish if you want for consumption but not required for daily prizes etc )

•Would this be a positive step for conservation and the long-term health of the fishery?

•How could it be implemented fairly and effectively?

•Measuring fish on approved bump boards?

•Photo submissions?

•Length-based scoring systems?

•Are there successful examples from other trout derbies that we could learn from?

A big shout-out to South Simcoe 4-H Association for coming out to visit us! 🎣

🎥 Drone footage from a recent river cleanup and blockage removal project.

Using drones helps us cover more ground, monitor riverbeds, and find issues faster while reducing disturbance to the environment.

🐟 As salmon spawning season gets underway, please avoid walking in creeks whenever possible. Salmon redds (egg nests) are fragile and easily damaged. Let's all do our part to protect local fish habitat.

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Stu Paterson, a true champion of conservation, community, and our environment.

Stu was a dedicated member of the Bruce Peninsula Sportsmen’s Association, a Director with OFAH Zone H, and, above all, a genuinely kind-hearted individual whose passion, leadership, and generosity touched so many lives. His commitment to protecting our natural resources and supporting others in the conservation community leaves a lasting legacy that will not be forgotten.

Stu will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Our deepest condolences go out to his wife, Nancy, and to his family and friends during this difficult time.

As a club, we will honour Stu’s legacy by continuing to do all we can for our watershed, our fishery, and for the next generation of conservationists. His dedication and example will continue to inspire our work for years to come.

Rest in peace, Stu. Thank you for all you did for our community and the outdoors we cherish. We will all miss the reports from the Oxenden Bureau.
