In rural and northern Alberta, homelessness isn’t always what you think.

It can be a neighbour who lost work, a young person aging out of care, or a person starting over after a fire, flood, or experience of violence.

It’s not about choices, it’s about circumstances.
And it can happen to almost anyone.

The more we understand each other’s stories, the stronger our community becomes.

The legal system can be overwhelming, especially if you’re also dealing with mental health challenges, substance use, or the impacts of trauma.

Our Court Navigation and Support Program is here to make sure no one has to face it alone. We walk with individuals through each step of their legal journey, from understanding charges and court processes to connecting them with resources that can support their healing.

With limited services available for our most vulnerable neighbours, this program provides the guidance and advocacy needed to not just get through court, but to build a path forward.

“Why is that person sleeping outside?”

If your child has asked this, you’re not alone. Homelessness is becoming more visible, and our kids are paying attention.

This can feel like a hard conversation to have, but with simple language, compassion, and age-appropriate honesty, you can help your child understand the reality of homelessness with empathy.

At Cold Lake John Howard Society, we believe in creating a community where everyone has access to a safe and stable place to call home. We’re proud to support the Pushing For Change event in Bonnyville, an incredible event raising awareness about homelessness and working to destigmatize the challenges many face. This conversation is a very important one for our community to have.

FAQ: Is there a curfew at our Emergency Shelter?
We strive to maintain a safe and supportive environment for everyone. While there isn’t an official lights-out “curfew,” we do request that guests check in or return by 11 pm each evening so our staff can ensure everyone has a place for the night. If you need to arrive late due to work or other commitments, simply let us know in advance. We work hard to accommodate everyone's schedules as best we can, but communication is key. Everyone's comfort and safety is our top priority.

As you declutter your home this spring, consider donating items that could make a huge difference for someone in need. Warm clothing, hygiene products, bedding, and gently used household items can help individuals and families experiencing homelessness find comfort and stability.

Your spring refresh can be a fresh start for someone else. Drop off donations at Cold Lake John Howard Society or visit www.cljhs.com to learn more about how you can help!

The Cold Lake John Howard Society Emergency Shelter is open to adults (18 and older) who are experiencing homelessness in Cold Lake and surrounding areas. The shelter provides a low-barrier, safe, and supportive environment for individuals in need of emergency housing, regardless of background or circumstances.

We serve people who may be facing:
- Chronic or temporary homelessness due to financial hardship, eviction, job loss, or other crises.
- Displacement from housing due to domestic violence, unsafe living conditions, or personal safety concerns.
- Mental health challenges that impact their ability to maintain stable housing.
- Substance use challenges, recognizing that addiction is a complex issue that requires support, not exclusion.

While we strive to accommodate all individuals in need, there may be situations where alternative housing or support options are recommended, especially for individuals with high medical needs, families with children, or those requiring specialized care. In these cases, our staff will help connect individuals with appropriate services and resources.

The shelter is inclusive and non-discriminatory, welcoming individuals of all genders, ethnic backgrounds, and identities. We are committed to creating a space that is respectful, culturally safe, and accessible to everyone.
