Oh, look what we have here! It's the 2-stall shelter that the Kindness Club graciously approved our grant application for! 🥳
We started back in 2019, and never would I have thought we'd grow as we have.
The need for shelter, safety, medical care, and a quiet, stable home for aging, injured, and displaced farmed animals has never been in question. It's a huge need that few of us consider until we're faced with it head-on.
While cruelty, neglect, and urgent medical cases are common reasons people reach out to us for help, we also receive just as many requests from people who want good care for their elderly animals but are out of options to provide it.
Some recent situations have included overwhelmed owners in crisis, family members left behind after an unexpected loss who are now tasked with finding homes for their sibling's farm animals, children advocating for animals they've bonded with, social workers responding to neglect cases with no placement options for animals, and so many more uniquely challenging scenarios.
As a side note, we’ve seen a sharp increase in requests to take in animals since the announcement a couple of months ago that the province will lose its provincial veterinary field services for large animals in March.
We’re not going anywhere, though. We’re here for the animals and the people who care about them in this province and, more broadly, in Atlantic Canada, as we have served and helped animals and people across NB, NS, and PEI.
That's why this shelter matters. If you remember, we received a grant from The Eric S. Margolis Foundation to fence in additional pasture space. That work was completed last year, thanks to Gateway Fence. The new 2-stall shelter will be located within that fenced area to create an urgent intake space for large animals. Ground prep will begin this month, and the shelter will be delivered later this summer.
The two-stall shelter in the picture will increase the amount we're able to help both the animals who find themselves here and the people who care about them.
But really, this post is about more than a new shelter made possible by a grant. It’s about seeing that where there’s a will, there’s a way. Combine that with the heart of an advocate, multiply it by the caring community that ensures Lily’s Place exists, and you’re looking at people from far and wide who are making the world a kinder place, no matter what challenges we may face!
