DID YOU KNOW?!?

The Cochrane Ecological Institute has been in operation for over SIXTY YEARS!!

In that time, we’ve received a plethora of awards and accolades!

From Prince Phillip to Environment Canada, we’ve had the honour of being recognized by some very important people and institutions! We are always so grateful for the opportunity to raise awareness for wildlife conservation and rehabilitation!

A good friend of CEI is participating in a 100km water bike challenge to raise funds for Europe’s first ever Rainforest Research Centre!

And at the age of 90 years young!

It just goes to show that people of ALL ages can make a positive impact on the environment!

If you would like to sponsor this worthy cause, or for more information, see our “Waterbike Challege” link-in-bio!

We were so busy with wildlife rescues yesterday that we missed posting about World Endangered Species Day!

We spent time yesterday reflecting on the state of local wildlife, and renewing our commitment to protecting and reintegrating injured and orphaned wildlife into their natural habitats!

We encourage everyone to reach out to organizations that support endangered wildlife rescue efforts… whether you volunteer your time, donate some funds, or just broaden your knowledge… NOW is the time to ACT to save some of these endangered species before it’s too late!

A big shout out to our friends the Public Works Department in the Village of Carbon!

Last week they discovered an injured owlet in one of their public campgrounds!

They quickly moved their campers to other sites, and blocked off the area with the injured owlet to keep him safe while they contacted us for help! We were able to provide them with contact resources for wildlife rehabilitation in the area!

It was later discovered that the owlet was luckily NOT injured after all! He was merely learning to fly and was stunned from a rough landing! But you know what they say… any landing you can walk away from is a good landing, and the little owlet is back in the air again these days!

We’re so grateful to the Village of Carbon Department of Public Works for going above and beyond to ensure the safety of our local wildlife!

NEW PATIENT ALERT!

This gorgeous hawk was recently brought to us with a broken wing and injured leg. We have him in our infirmary for the weekend, and will be sending him for a vet check this week!

We’ve named his “Smarty Pants” in honour of his rescuer, whose last name is Smart!

Just another example of how members of the public can save an animal’s life simply by picking up the phone and giving us a call!

We recently took in an injured Goldeneye Duck!

He healed up so quickly that he took flight back into the wild before we could get any good up-close photos!

So here is a photo of him happily swimming in our pond shortly before he took off to his next destination!

Here’s another view of Eddie the Eagle self-releasing into the wild!

Sound on! Watch until the end to see him take flight!

NEW PATIENT ALERT!

We recently received an injured Goldeneye Duck! This isn’t his photo… he was a little camera shy when he arrived, so we will let him get settled before his photoshoot, but we wanted to showcase his species’ beautiful looks!

So far our patient is not showing signs of illness or traumatic injury, so we hope to get him back on the wing again soon!

FUN FACT! Goldeneyes are some of the first ducks to appear in the spring, because they are tree nesters, and do not need open or thawed water to thrive! All they need is a nice hole in a tree!

Time for an update on the fawns in care... They're doing very well, all were weaned off their bottles by early September and released into a larger enclosure for the winter season.

They have adapted brilliantly to their new environment and are becoming more independent. They'll stay in our care over winter so that we can make sure they're getting the nutrients they need and continuing to learn their natural behaviours.

Much of their progress is thanks to the donations we have been given this fall, from apples to pumpkins these fawns have been dining very well! Thank you once again for all your generosity!

If you'd like to help out, check out our Donations and Wishlist page on our website! https://ceiwildlife.org/donate/
