June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day. It's a time to recognize and celebrate the traditions, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis. But when it comes to the prevention of trafficking and exploitation, there is a lack of resources available that are grounded in Indigenous culture and community Though they make up just 4% of the Canadian female population, Indigenous females make up 50% of reported cases of trafficking.

This is why we are so pleased to partner with Global Foundation and their Makwa Dodem program. Makwa Dodem is dedicated to equipping and empowering Indigenous communities to prevent s*xual exploitation through culturally safe, trauma-informed and strengths-based approaches. Their approach is collaborative, community-led and honours the unique strengths, culture and wisdom of each community with which they partner. This is not your typical Father's day stat: did you know that the vast majority of injustice in the world is perpetrated by men? Pictured are a few father/son and father/daughter climbing teams who have participated in the Everest Freedom Challenge. These are fathers who are raising sons and daughters to fight against s*xual exploitation and to uphold human dignity and worth. They are modeling how to do hard things and how to sacrifice to help others. I'm sure they'd all say they are doing it imperfectly, but we see them making the world a better place. This is a shout-out to all the amazing dads we know and love. We are grateful for you. Happy Father's Day!

So far this year our climbers have raised over $26,000 for our partners! Curious how it works? When climbers sign up for the Everest Freedom Challenge they choose which of our partners they will support. The funds raised are handled directly by our partner organizations to help them in their work preventing trafficking, rescuing victims, and restoring survivors. We had such a good time at our last month's training hike and are looking forward to getting together again on Saturday! These are great opportunities for climbers to get some mountain training in while getting to know climbers, crew, alumni, and others in our community. It takes dedication, heart, and grit to end exploitation and trafficking. It also takes a community, supporting and encouraging one another to persevere. These training hikes are a physical reminder of that truth. Together we can end exploitation.

Excited for our group hike tomorrow! This is a great opportunity for registered climbers, friends, family, and our community to get to know one another while out training in the mountains. We'll trade training and fundraising tips while encouraging each other in the fight against trafficking. Praying for no snow but we'll be prepared! See you out there!

April 19 - 25th is Volunteer Appreciation Week! Freedom 8848 is a volunteer-run organization, and we couldn't accomplish anything without our dedicated volunteers who show up to run the Everest Freedom Challenge every year. Volunteer crew are truly the reason climbers feel so loved and celebrated at the EFC.

We are so grateful for our chefs, who are serving (longer than) sun-up to sun-down making hot breakfast for climbers and making sure the last returning climbers receive a nourishing dinner. Thank you to those who shuttle climbers safely and swiftly to and from their hikes, the guides encouraging climbers up the mountains, and our emergency medical professionals helping to ward off dehydration and injury. Thank you to the musically gifted who lead worship at camp.

And we can't forget our climber care team, aka 'Mountain Mamas," who shower climbers with love, celebration, comfort, and snacks. We are so grateful for everyone who is willing to serve, often year after year, taking time out of their lives to make the EFC an unforgetable experience.

At the Anti-Trafficking Summit last month, Robin from International Justice Mission Canada shared such a motivating message about moving forward to seek justice even when you're not ready. He shared about the first rescue mission of IJM's new field office in Bangladesh. The rescue team didn't have all the resources or information they needed for a perfect rescue mission, but the stakes were too high to wait any longer. Young women and girls were being sold for s*x every day they waited. So they moved forward with the operation and while it didn't go perfectly, they managed to rescue many young women and girls from further abuse. Robin reminded us that if you wait around for everything to line up perfectly, you may wait forever. The time to take action is now.

One of the repeated stories I hear from EFC climbers over the years is that they felt convicted to help victims of human trafficking, even though they weren't sure they were the person for the job. Often when everyone gathers at camp on the eve of EFC, many people feel nervous and unsure they have trained physically enough for the challenge ahead of them. But they have committed to action. They offer their best at the time, and most of the time are surprised by what they could accomplish. Because someone has to do something to end s*x trafficking. It's time to take action. You are more ready than you think.
