With the knowledge we continue to acquire surrounding ASD, FASD, anxiety and other behavioural and emotional challenges within children and adults, there is a growing recognition of resources required to provide beneficial support. One support of great benefit is a most recognizable animal - the horse. Just being in the presence of such a large, gentle, non-judgmental animal can decrease anxiety and help to overcome fear. Working around horses, grooming, leading and talking to them, both verbally and non-verbally, creates a bond of trust, respect and friendship. The relationship promotes self-regulation, respect for self and others and self-confidence.
Grooming the horse involves direct contact providing a wide range of tactile and sensory stimulation - handling the grooming tools, the feel of the horses body, the smells and sounds of the horse. Increase in fine and gross motor skills occurs simply by brushing the horse, aiding in improving hand-eye coordination, range of motion, flexibility and upper body strength. There is a visual response in how the horse stands and shifts its body as it enjoys the brushing and petting.
