Huron County Federation of Agriculture The Huron County Federation of Agriculture will work collaboratively towards a profitable, sustainable future for local farmers.

Last week, the Huron County Federation of Agriculture hosted its annual MP/MPP Forum with Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb and MPP Lisa Thompson in Clinton. While local politicians, planners and farm commodity group leaders all had their turn to trumpet their successes and voice their concerns, one issue kept coming up: the importance of free trade. As of the 2021 census, Huron County had 2,564 farms with 681,476 acres of farmland. The agriculture sector employed 4,205 people in Huron County, representing 13.8 percent of the county’s workforce and 6.9 percent of the total population.

And that doesn't take into account the wider agri-food sector in Huron county which accounts for 23 percent of the workforce and 11.4 percent of the entire population, not including the countless jobs and revenue that agriculture supports in the banking, service, transportation, construction, and other industries.

And we are delighted to have the Huron County Federation of Agriculture joining us as a Planter sponsor at our Farmer's Breakfast on Friday, helping bring an MRI machine to Huron County.

What Is Food Freedom Day?

According to the Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA), Sunday, February 8, 2026, marks Food Freedom Day, the day when the average Canadian household has earned enough income to cover its entire annual grocery bill.

Each year, CFA tracks how much of Canadians’ disposable income is spent on food and beverages to understand changes in food affordability. In 2025, Canadians spent 10.8% of their disposable income on food, up slightly from 10.7% in 2024, keeping Food Freedom Day on the same date as last year.

While Canada continues to have relatively affordable food by global standards, rising food prices over time have placed added pressure on many households — particularly those with lower incomes. Last year, households in the lowest income quintile spent 28.2% of their disposable income on food, compared to 5.18% for those in the highest income quintile.

It’s also important to note that higher grocery prices don’t necessarily mean higher returns for farmers, who receive only a small share of the retail food dollar.

Behind the wheel of that tractor or combine is someone’s irreplaceable loved one. When you encounter farm equipment on the road this thanksgiving weekend it’s important to be alert, slow down, be patient, share the road, and stay in your lane. Ontario farmers are busy harvesting the fall crops that ultimately fill our plates. We all want to get home to our loved ones safely and when we all practice patience and prioritize safety we can.
