Supporting a sustainable and inclusive food system in the North Thompson We support all residents of the North Thompson in their quest for food security.

The YCS Food Security Program is part of Yellowhead Community Services, a non-profit social services agency in Clearwater, BC. We offer cooking and gardening workshops, resources and information, and we collaborate with other organizations to enhance our local food systems. We operate a community kitchen and community garden and are the community partner for our local BC Association of Farmers Markets Nutrition Coupon Program.

Children's Garden Contest Judging Time! The prizes this year have been generously donated by Rooted by the River Nursery. First place - $50, second place - $40, third place $25 gift certificates.
If your child registered for the contest this year, please check your inboxes! Invitations have been sent out for garden visits! If your child grew a garden and did NOT register for the contest, there is still time - please reach out to Joanna at 250-674-1472 or [email protected] to enter.

Registration is now open for the August session - Intro to Pressure Canning (for beginners). Pressure Canning is the safest method of canning low acid vegetables and meats and it's not as scary as you think! Call 250-672-9773 to register.

It’s never too hot for soup! 😎

We currently have a freezer full of soups available at the Dutch Lake Community Centre.

Donations to the Food Security program are gratefully accepted, however there is no cost to access. Soups are also available in Barriere at The Ridge.

A BIG thank you goes out to Jaxon W., who generously volunteered their time and culinary expertise to whip up a huge batch of veggie chili and split pea & ham soup!

Did you know that we now have a Lending Library of food preservation equipment in Barriere? Works just like any other library - check out items to borrow for free and get preserving that garden harvest! Not sure where to start? Take a Canning Workshop with Laura Mairs - coming up July 26! Limited space, register early!
