What is the boreal forest? 🌲

Stretching across the Northern Hemisphere, the boreal forest is one of the largest ecosystems on Earth. But what makes this cold, northern landscape so special?

From the trees and plants that have adapted to harsh conditions to the many species that call the boreal forest home, the boreal forest plays an important role in our planet’s ecosystems, including storing carbon.

Here in Churchill, the boreal forest meets the tundra, creating a unique landscape where these two ecosystems come together.

Researcher Feature: Joss, Betty, and Lorenzo from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences! It was their first time in Churchill and they’d love to come back again next year!

Peat is a spongy, brown material made of partially decayed plant matter that accumulates in wet areas over thousands of years and can act as a significant carbon sink. Understanding how and where peat forms is essential to understanding past and future greenhouse gas concentrations. In the field, this team measured peat depth, pH, plant species, electrical conductivity, and organic matter content across a broad range of environmental conditions. Their aim is to test and integrate theories of peat formation which are currently poorly documented.
Preliminary results show negative correlations between peat depth, pH, and electrical conductivity demonstrating the important role of ground water in peat formation and preservation.

Seasonal Staff Highlights ✨

Another summer at the centre means saying goodbye to some of the wonderful people who helped make it happen. From helping with fieldwork and rocket greens to assisting guests and researchers, our seasonal staff’s support and enthusiasm made a big difference in everyday work and life at the centre.

We’re grateful for all their hard work and for the time they spent with us this summer. We hope they leave with some great memories from their time in Churchill, and we’ll definitely miss them around here!

A huge thank you to one of our very generous supporters who has given us some top-quality laboratory equipment!
We got a Thermo Scientific centrifuge and dry bath along with 1000µL, 200µL, 20µL and 10µL eppendorf micropipettes!
This new equipment will be used by our visiting researchers for many years to come! 👨🏽‍🔬👩🏻‍🔬

For 50 years, the Churchill Northern Studies Centre has been a place for research, learning, discovery and connection, and the Churchill community has been an important part of that story.

We’re inviting community members to join us for an evening at the CNSC as we celebrate this milestone and show our appreciation for the community that has supported us along the way!
