CHURCHBRIDGE — The annual Churchbridge June Daze festival will get underway, bringing a multi-day slate of sports, family activities and local shopping promotions to this east-central Saskatchewan community.
Organized by the Churchbridge Business Association, the event runs from June 18 to June 21.
The celebration moves forward just days after the Town of Churchbridge was forced to declare a local state of emergency on June 10. A severe weekend storm dumped more than 55 millimetres of rain in a 40-minute span, completely overwhelming the town's sewer systems, lift stations and basement infrastructure.
Thanks to an immediate response from local volunteers and emergency support crews, flood cleanup efforts have progressed rapidly. The town has mobilized free large disposal bins for flood-damaged materials, and municipal officials are actively pursuing relief through the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program to restore local infrastructure.
Festival proceeds with 'positive energy'
Despite the challenging week, event organizers confirm that the June Daze schedule remains completely intact.
"We haven't had to necessarily cancel anything," said Connie Olm of the Churchbridge Business Association. "Just maybe like moving them a little bit or being a little more sensitive to where they are."
Olm noted that while town resources remain heavily taxed from emergency recovery, municipal workers have still managed to provide picnic tables and event support. Some outdoor event locations and parking spots remain wet, and organizers are keeping a close eye on an unstable weekend weather forecast.
"There's still people in the community struggling with some water and cleanup activities after, but a lot of it has calmed down quite a bit," Olm said, adding that major highways have fully reopened. "We're going forward with positive attitudes and positive energy."
Olm also praised the town's proactive recovery initiatives, specifically the placement of free disposal dumpsters throughout the community to help residents clear out ruined household items.
