But For the Grace of God (there go I)

"But for the grace of God" in Alcoholics Anonymous is a core spiritual concept meaning that an individual's sobriety and survival are due to a Higher Power's unearned favor. It reminds members they are not sober through pure willpower alone, fostering humility and compassion. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5] The phrase is most commonly used in two ways:...

I was given two choices that day get help or get out!

The year was 1985 and I had come home at 6 am after one of my all nighters of drinking and drugging. My wife stood at the top of the stairs a suitcase next to her. I looked up with bleary eyes and asked, you leaving me? She replied, no you have to options today you will either get help or get out....

It is a reminder to embrace humility, laugh at your mistakes, and find joy in the recovery journey. The Origin Story The term stems from a letter written by AA co-founder Bill Wilson. In the early days, an ambitious group in West Virginia planned to build an elaborate, expensive rehab and recovery facility....

On Tradition Three – Editorial by Bill W

“Our membership ought to include all who suffer alcoholism. Hence we may refuse none who wish to recover. Nor ought A.A. membership ever depend upon money or conformity. Any two or three alcoholics gathered together for sobriety may call themselves an A.A. group, provided that, as a group, they have no other affiliation.” This is a sweeping statement indeed; it takes in a lot of territory....

I am a compulsive overeater. I have always loved food – the buying, eating, baking, reading recipes, watching cookery programmes, going to restaurants – all of it. As a child I’d bake on a Saturday at home. I would make twice or three times the volume suggested in the recipe. As an adult, going out for meals was a pleasure and an easy way for me to socialise....

The Rooms Of Recovery. Story of recovery

Into the humble and once smoke-filled rooms with rickety chairs and worn-out carpet, I stepped Banners suggesting a flicker of hope draped the walls as my new fellows shuffled in, to seek redemption No one is skipping or dancing yet smiles adorn their faces, maybe a welcome holy grail for this lost soul All welcome they said there’s only one requirement at this very minute, a desire, with no apparent leader of this loving pack…...
