When I was drinking I was thankful every morning that I was still alive. Now I’m thankful every morning for being alive.

I have heard it said in AA meetings that alcoholism is the only illness that will convince you that you haven’t got one. This was certainly true for me in my last days of drinking. Like a whirlpool, it affected everyone around me. First those dearest to me and then the circle widened with me in the middle. It was no longer a pleasure for me to drink but a necessity....

Is AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) for You?

Only you can decide if you want to give AA a try or if you think it might help you. People in AA joined because they could no longer control their drinking. They realized they couldn’t drink safely and learned from others that they weren’t “bad” people, they were sick people. Many found that others shared the same feelings of guilt, loneliness, and hopelessness....

Only you can decide if you want to give AA a try or if you think it might help you.

Tim’s Story: ‘Doctor in Recovery’.

Having a medical degree is no protection against addiction. The annals of medical history are littered with the evidence of this simple fact. Nevertheless, for a long time I fancied that a bit of knowledge gleaned at medical school would act as a shield. I got this wrong at two levels, really. Until I suffered from it, I actually knew next to nothing about alcoholism and the little I thought I did know tended to enable my drinking rather than slow it down....

Service and Your Recovery: Working the 12th Step

In active addiction, we often revolve around feeding the addiction by focusing on ourselves. As we enter our recovery journey, we must shift focus to helping others. Whether sober for ten days or ten years, aiding others on their own journey plays a huge part in ensuring success in recovery. Remember, Narcotics Anonymous says, “We can only keep what we have by giving it away.” But what counts as service in recovery? ...

PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE shows that nothing will so much insure immunity from drinking as intensive work with other alcoholics.

n my own experience, helping others in and outside of the program plays a pivotal role in strengthening my own recovery. When I first started attending 12-Step meetings, I felt overwhelmed and uncertain about my ability to stay sober and no less be of help to others. I was afraid to participate in meetings by sharing and was way too selfish to do any service....
