🏃♂️ Honouring Henry Rempel – The Heart Behind Our Hand-Carved Walking Sticks 🪵
This year’s Around the Lake Give’r Take 30 solo winners will be taking home something truly special — a hand-carved walking stick made by local legend Henry Rempel.
Henry has enjoyed an incredible 50-year running journey — from age 34 to 83 — running marathons in Seattle, Richmond, and Vancouver, including one every year from 1981 to 1991.
Even now, he walks 5 km most days, and when the weather isn’t great, he hops on the elliptical instead. 💪
While his 3:17 marathon is an impressive feat, Henry says his true highlight came during a Vancouver Marathon when, hitting the wall at mile 20, the theme song from Chariots of Fire started to play in his head — and carried him all the way to the finish line.
For Henry, running has always been a time for meditation, prayer, and solitude.
When he was just eight years old, living in a refugee camp in Europe, his father gave him a jackknife for Christmas — the only gift he remembers receiving. From that moment on, carving became a lifelong passion.
Over the years, Henry has made countless walking sticks for family and friends. He finds a piece of wood, carves it into a stick, and then waits for inspiration — sometimes a pattern appears, or a design seems to beckon him to begin carving.
Each stick carries its own story and spirit, much like the man who made it.
Henry shared one of his guiding mottos with us:
✨ “I aspire to inspire before I expire.”
We couldn’t think of a more fitting sentiment.
Thank you, Henry, for sharing your story, your craftsmanship, and your inspiration with our running community. ❤️
