Block Watch/ Grow Watch is a program which consists of neighbors looking out for neighbors and maintaining open lines of communication within their blocks. Participants are educated on what suspicious activities/persons are and how to properly report them to the police and how to be an “extra set” of eyes and ears for the police. The Grow Watch Program educates residents on how to recognize a drug (flop) house, grow op, and/or drug activity going on in their neighborhood and teaches them how to properly report any incidents to the police and BW/GW Coordinator. There are 3 phases to the education process in the BW/GW Programs:
1) Gaining neighborhood cooperation and participation through recruitment
2) Training both the neighborhood Captains & Co-Captains and participants
3) Certification and installation of signage
The Block Watch Program includes teaching residents how to better secure their homes, inside and outside property, and vehicles using the Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) model. These Programs help teach our community residents that we need to work together as a whole to solve criminal problems and does not involve just one individual or resources.
