SMA FAMILIES: RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY

Researchers at Columbia University are recruiting children with SMA for a 2026 summer study evaluating an intensive therapy program that combines HABIT-ILE (Hand-Arm Bimanual Intensive Therapy Including Lower Extremities) and Functional Strength Training (FST).

Eligibility includes:
• Ages 5–17
• Confirmed SMA diagnosis
• Stable disease-modifying treatment for at least 6 months
• SMA Type 2 or 3 (sitter or walker)

The study aims to evaluate how intensive, play-based therapy may impact motor function in children with SMA.

The Lisa Huus Bursary is now open for applications, supporting students with disabilities pursuing post-secondary education in British Columbia or Alberta.

$500 – $5,000 per recipient

This bursary was created to honour Lisa Huus, who advocated for equal access to education - helping others follow their academic dreams.
