During the First World War, Piper James Richardson of the 16th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, inspired his fellow Canadians at the Battle of the Somme.

As his comrades advanced on Regina Trench in France, Richardson played his bagpipes under heavy enemy fire, boosting their courage and helping drive the attack forward.

For his extraordinary bravery and sacrifice, he was awarded the Victoria Cross, Canada’s highest military honour for valour, posthumously.
