New Member Feature!

Each week, we will feature a member of our club to highlight the amazing people who make up The Rotary Club of Chilliwack.

This week, our Member Feature is: Kaitlyn Janzen

Q: Why did you decide to join Rotary, and what do you hope to experience through your involvement?
A: I joined Rotary because I’m looking to meet new people, build meaningful connections, and find new ways to be more involved in my community. I hope to learn from others, contribute where I can, and be part of projects that make a positive difference locally.

Q: What are some of your hobbies and interests outside of Rotary?
A: I enjoy spending time with my family outside camping, around a lake and enjoying a campfire (when we are able to).

Q: Are there particular causes, community issues, or types of service that are especially meaningful to you?
A: Having two small children, community causes and issues regarding youth is especially meaningful to me.

Q: Tell us a little about your professional background and your connection to the Chilliwack community.
A: While I grew up in Harrison, my family are long time Chilliwack residents and I worked and lived in Chilliwack for a long time. I am an HR Professional who has worked in a number of different industries supporting businesses in the Fraser Valley.

Q: What’s something about you people might be surprised or interested to learn?
A: I incorporated my business the same day my daughter started Kindergarten, and I challenged myself to learn to file my own corporate taxes.

Q: What’s something about you that your fellow Rotarians might be surprised or interested to learn?
A: I’m an avid reader and average more than one book a week. That doesn’t include the 5,000+ kids’ books I’ve read along the way.

This Friday's club meeting takes place at the Chilliwack Curling Club and on Zoom. This week's speaker is former member Vee Lyver. In her talk entitled "A Kidney, A Stranger, and a Set of Signs", she'll tell us about her experiences as a kidney transplant recipient.

Member Feature Monday.
Each week, we will feature a member of our club to highlight the amazing people who make up The Rotary Club of Chilliwack.

This week, our Member Feature is: Sherilyn Williams

Q: How long have you been a part of Rotary and what has kept you involved?
A: I’m just coming up on my first year with Rotary. What’s kept me involved is the people. As a business owner who works remotely, it’s easy to spend whole days behind a screen, and the lunches and firesides have become something I look forward to. It’s a room full of people who show up for our community and for each other, and I’ve loved getting to know them.

Q: What are some of your hobbies and interests outside of Rotary?
A: I love being creative in the kitchen. I’d much rather make something from scratch, down to the croutons, than grab it off the shelf. I’m part of the Ultraspeaking community, where I practise speaking off the cuff, and I usually have melodic house music playing while I work. Professionally I sit on Boards, communicate with Government offices, and am a Subject Matter Expert with Community Futures.

Q: Which areas of service are you involved with, and why?
A: In my first year I’ve jumped in wherever I could: the book sale, and helping with Bowls of Hope during the Epic Day of Service. Hands-on projects like these are my favourite way to get to know people. You learn a lot about someone when you’re sorting books or serving side by side, and it’s a meaningful way to give back to the community my family and business call home.

Q: What impact do you think Rotary has had on you personally, our community, or the world at large?
A: Rotary has reminded me that I’m not building my business, or my life, in isolation. Running my own company can feel like a solo journey, but this year I’ve found a group of people who welcome you in, put you to work on something good, and make you feel like you belong.

Q: What’s something about you people might be surprised or interested to learn?

A: I have been part of Rotary for about two years. I have stayed involved because of the connections I have made and the opportunity to be part of something that brings people together for a greater purpose.

Q: What are some of your hobbies and interests outside of Rotary?
A: I enjoy cars, chess, running, and listening to audiobooks. I also like learning about new technology and keeping up with what is happening in the IT and cybersecurity world.

Q: Which areas of service are you involved with, and why?
A: I am interested in supporting youth, local businesses, and initiatives that contribute to economic development. I have had the opportunity to serve with organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters and local Chambers of Commerce, and I enjoy sharing my experience where it can be useful.

Q: What impact do you think Rotary has had on you personally, our community, or the world at large?
A: Rotary has helped me become more connected to the community and has introduced me to people I may not have otherwise met. It has also given me a different perspective on the needs and opportunities within our community.

Q: What’s something about you people might be surprised or interested to learn?
A: People might be surprised to know that I enjoy chess. I like the strategy and patience it requires. After spending so much time working in technology, it is a completely different way of keeping my mind engaged.

Kelly O’s Chilliwack - Pints for Polio - October 24
World Polio Day is October 24. On that Saturday, you can gather with other Rotarians and friends at Kelly O’Bryan’s on Luckakuck Way from 5:00-8:30 pm. Tickets to this event are $30.00 (plus fees) and will include a pasta buffet featuring three pastas, a Caeser salad and garlic bread.
