He was a proud member of the Canadian military, serving with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI). After a distinguished military career, which included serving in the Korean War, several missions as a UN peacekeeper in Cyprus, and being awarded the Order of Military Merit, John retired in 1978. SITREP - SIFFLEUR FALLS
D-DAY CEREMONY - 2026

Committee planning for our 82nd Anniversary of D-Day Ceremony at the 1st Canadian Parachute Bn Cairn, Siffleur Falls Staging Area, 4th thru 7th of June 2026 has begun. For those of us who are familiar with these preparations, we know that early staffing for certain related requirements for the event is important. A commitment of attendance for our key parade positions needs to be confirmed early, as does liaison with David Thompson Resort (DTR), AB Parks personnel, and 3rd Bn PPCLI, to confirm climb and parade support. Messaging in these areas is underway or soon will be.

To date, the accommodation/camping/BBQ rates for this year at David Thompson Resort (DTR) have been received and are attached to this SITREP. Booking reservations at DTR for the event is now open for members. Note, it is important that when booking reservations with DTR, you need to use the code AIR82. The resort will block a number of rooms for us until 20 May 2026, after that you take your chances in getting a room booked. Remember, this area has become extremely popular for tourists in the past few years, and accommodation and camp sites have become a premium in the area!

If you do have problems booking, contact DTR - [email protected] – and ask for assistance. Resort will not open until 08 May 2026, so you may not get a phone call response if you call before then (1-403-721-2103), but you can try.

For the climb event on the 5th of June, we presently have confirmed three sets of ashes will be going up Normandy Peak. It is important to remember that if you are planning to bring the ashes for this event yourself, you must be booked into the DTR by 04th of June 2026, or, be prepared to be at the Cairn location at the Siffleur Falls Staging Area by 0700 hours on the 5th of June. Alternatively, would be to for you to get the ashes to me by 05th of June, as I leave for DTR on the fourth! Also, for any non-active military members planning to accompany the climb team, you must contact the Airborne Social Club (Edmonton) and request our briefing package that outlines the procedures and recommended preparations needed before you participate in the climb. That request needs to be done early…not the date before the climb!

The ceremony on the 6th of June will take place at 1300 hours at the 1st Canadian Parachute Bn Cairn, at the Siffleur Falls Staging Area. For those unfamiliar with the event, the site is located approximately ninety kilometers west of Nordegg, AB, off Hwy 11. A key landmark before the site is the Kootenay Plains Provincial Recreation Area on Hwy 11. Detailed program information for the event will be published in due course.

In the meantime, we will also be contacting our British friends at the British Army Training Unit Suffield (BATUS) and other key associations (PPCLI, CAFA, FSSF, VVC, RCACC) and invite them to join us for the parade ceremony on the 6th of June.

As we get closer to the event, I will continue to meet with our new committee in guidance and support as we staff all the requirements. Our immediate needs will be to liaise with AB Parks personnel in Rocky Mountain House, to get the permit coverage for the ceremony and confirm 3rd Bn PPCLI support. Other requirements will be actioned via Committee direction in the next months. The planned date for the liaison recce to AB Parks, DTR and the Cairn site is tentatively set for 14 May 2026.

Updates and further SITREPs will be published as needed, and at our monthly meetings prior to the event in June. The important requirement from members now, is to commit to attend this event and do it early…to do it now!

Stay well. Airborne!

We regret to advise of the death of Warrant Officer John Edward “Jack” Novak, CD (Ret’d) in Chilliwack on 02 November at age 81. Jack was a Combat Engineer with both Airborne and Combat Diver specialties.
Jack enlisted in London ON. After completing his Basic Field Engineer training at the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering in Chilliwack BC, he remained in Chilliwack with a posting to 3 Field Squadron. After this tour, Jack was posted to 1 Field Squadron in Petawawa ON in 1960, but it was a short tour as he was soon in Germany with 4 Field Squadron ( 1961 – 64). Jack returned home to Canada to 1 Field Squadron and became a qualified parachutist and on jump strength.
Jack was one of the large group of sapper Jumpers that were posted to Edmonton in 1968 upon the formation of 1 Airborne Field Squadron in Edmonton AB. After this tour, he returned to 1 Field Squadron (1970-73) before being posted back to the Canadian Airborne Regiment (1973-75). Jack’s last posting was as an instructor at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering from which he retired. He subsequently returned to uniform in the Reserves on Class B Service with CFB Chilliwack Base Ops (1986 - 91) after which he retired for the second time. Jack retired in the Chilliwack area

Strathconas,
Yet another great personality of our Regiment has passed – Captain (Retired) Rollie Keith passed away on October 1st.

Captain Rollie Keith served more than 32 years in the Canadian Army. He began his career as a Trooper and, after commissioning, retired as a Captain in 1991. His service included postings with Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians), the Canadian Airborne Regiment, and the 8th Canadian Hussars. Rollie thrived in the field alongside his soldiers and had a lifelong passion for tanks, with scout cars a close second.

Inspired by his father, a WW1 veteran of Vimy Ridge, Rollie joined the Army in 1955 during the Cold War. He deployed to the Middle East during the 1956 Suez Crisis as a Ferret Scout Car driver with 56th Canadian Reconnaissance Squadron in the Sinai. Decades later, he served as a UN military observer in the Balkans during the Kosovo conflict, and in the early 2000s travelled to Baghdad as an impartial observer before the Iraq War.

Rollie and his wife Pam were enthusiastic participants in the “Left Coast Lancer” luncheons organized by the local Strathcona Association branch, held each March (Moreuil Wood) and November (Leliefontein) in Sidney, B.C. The photo below, from the March 2025 luncheon, shows a functioning Ferret - like the one Rollie drove during the Suez Crisis (without a turret). He was very proud of his service with the Airborne Regiment.

A remembrance ceremony will be on Tuesday 14 Oct at #295 Chilliwack-Vedder Legion on Vedder St, Chilliwack, BC. While the dress is casual, retired RCAC members are encouraged to wear regimental blazer, regimental tie, and medals.

Rollie was a much-loved character in our Regimental Family – our deepest sympathies go out to Pam and the Keith Family. Read more:
