September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This is a day to remember and honour the children who never returned home from residential schools, the survivors who did, and their families and communities. Commemorating this painful history and the ongoing impacts is a vital component of the reconciliation process. We wear orange on this day based on the Indigenous-led symbol of the stripping away of culture, traditional knowledge and ways of being, freedom, and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations and to promote the “Every Child Matters” ideal. Our image comes from https://www.rcaanc-cirnac.gc.ca/.../1631130.../1631130220404 and has special meaning. From the website: “In the centre are three symbols: a feather, a narwhal, and a flower. Each symbol represents the distinct cultures of First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities, brought together in a circular flowing composition to reflect the connection between the groups.Above the central elements, stars surrounding the moon honour the children who never returned home from residential schools and symbolize their enduring place in our thoughts and memory. The dotted patterns evoke beadwork and reflect the importance of passing down art, culture and traditions from one generation to the next. Flowing lines connect the elements of the design, reflecting the connections between land, water, communities and generations. Their winding path represents the journey of reconciliation and reminds us that reconciliation is an ongoing process. A number of our members joined the Kiwanis Clubs of Sardis and Chilliwack to volunteer at the event, as well. Each May, Speech and Hearing Month reminds us how important communication is to everyday life. Many children across Canada have challenges with speech and hearing, so they require support, access to care, and early intervention. We are proud to support them.

Through the Elks & Royal Purple Fund for Children, Elks of Canada (including Chilliwack Elks #48) supports a network of programs across the country, including the BC Family Hearing Resource Centre.
