🦈 WHITE SHARK BROOKES PINGS IN OFF KITTY HAWK, NC

Juvenile female white shark Brookes measured 8 ft. 10 in. and weighed an estimated 456 lbs at the time of tagging. Her latest ping (6/9) placed her ~5 miles off Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, as she continues her seasonal migration north.

Many white sharks in the western North Atlantic use the waters off the Carolinas as a staging area before continuing toward summer and fall foraging habitats farther north.

🦈 WHITE SHARKS STAGING OFF THE CAROLINAS

As ocean temperatures continue warming, multiple white sharks on the OCEARCH Global Shark Tracker are remaining near the Carolinas and VA ahead of their seasonal migration north. 🌊

With more sharks beginning to shift north, summer migration season is officially underway.

🦈 WHITE SHARK GOODALL TAKES AN UNEXPECTED ROUTE

Adult female white shark Goodall has researchers watching closely after shifting into the Northwest Providence Channel in the Bahamas.

Since being tagged in Sept. 2025, Goodall has traveled ~6,000 miles through the western North Atlantic. While many white sharks are currently migrating north along the U.S. East Coast, her recent eastward movement may reflect changing prey availability or environmental conditions.

“Movements like these remind us that white shark migration is not always linear or predictable,” says OCEARCH Senior Data Scientist John Tyminski.

Where do you think she will go next?

🦈 NEW WHITE SHARK PINGS ARE IN

Adult female white shark Goodall recently pinged ~5 miles off the southeast tip of Grand Bahama Island (May 17). She is currently moving through the Northwest Providence Channel, a deep-water passage between the Little Bahama Bank and Great Bahama Bank. Mature male Breton is the only other tagged white shark on the Global Shark Tracker known to have moved through this channel (Dec. 2022).

Meanwhile, juvenile female Nori continues leading this year’s seasonal northward migration. Her latest ping placed her ~6 miles off the Biddeford Pool peninsula south of Portland, Maine (May 17).

🦈 PSAT TAG RECOVERED—WHITE SHARK PERCY

A PSAT tag deployed on white shark Percy in collaboration with the Tancook Islands Marine Field Station has been successfully recovered after 270 days at sea.

Located nearly 40 miles offshore in the Gulf, this was no small feat. Huge thanks to Capt. Warren Smith, Danny, and Jacob Tankersley for their efforts to locate the tag in challenging conditions.

Why does this matter? PSAT tags have a recovery rate of just ~17%. Recovering one means we gain access to every data point recorded during deployment. That is 270 days of depth, temperature, and light measurements recorded every 5 seconds.

This level of detail helps us better understand how white sharks use the ocean and informs conservation efforts 🌊

🦈 WHITE SHARK NORI MAKES ANOTHER MOVE NORTH

Juvenile, white shark, Nori pinged ~1 mile off Long Island, NY near Southampton on May 8 before continuing her migration NE toward Martha’s Vineyard.

Her latest movements continue to highlight Nori as the first tagged white shark on the OCEARCH Global Shark Tracker to begin this year’s seasonal northward migration and may signal that the broader migration of western North Atlantic white sharks is beginning to ramp up.

“Nori’s departure from the staging areas off the Carolinas suggests that the start of the larger white shark migration toward their summer and fall foraging grounds off Atlantic Canada and Cape Cod is officially underway,” says OCEARCH Senior Data Scientist John Tyminski.

🦈 WHITE SHARK BELLA PINGING OFF THE FL PANHANDLE

Bella, a 10’2” juvenile female white shark, has made her way inshore along the Florida Panhandle. Her latest ping (April 20) places her ~8 miles off Cape San Blas.

Tagged off Nova Scotia last July, Bella has traveled more than 4,800 miles to reach the Gulf, an area white sharks use during the winter months for its warmer waters and abundant food.

So miracles really do happen!!

We've had 4 PSATs (pop up archival satellite tags) release from white sharks over the past few days. These sharks were tagged at Cross Island, Nova Scotia, Canada by the Tancook Team. PSATs archive data, release from the animal on a programmed date and then transmit the data to overhead satellites. If you physically recover these tags - then you are the luckiest people alive as you get the full data archive which is very special.

These tags popped off white sharks ranging from North Carolina to the Gulf of Mexico (Jason, Brass Bed, Baker and Ripple). Through the amazing efforts of many people (OCEARCH, North Carolina Shark Conservancy, boat captains and many other people) - these tags were recovered!

The data on the recovered tags is absolutely priceless! Pure gold. Thank you so much to everyone for their hard work and very long days to find and recover these tags. We think Kara and team are still sleeping after their adventures on the water!
