πŸ§ πŸ’œ June is ALSO Stroke Awareness Month πŸ’œπŸ§

June is Stroke Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about stroke prevention, recognition, recovery, and the lasting impact stroke can have on individuals, families, and communities.

A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, either by a blockage or bleeding in the brain. Stroke is a leading cause of disability and can affect people of all ages. The effects of stroke vary from person to person and may include changes in mobility, speech, memory, cognition, vision, emotions, and daily functioning.

Recognizing the signs of stroke and acting quickly can save lives and improve outcomes. Remember the acronym FAST:

πŸ”Ή F – Face: Is the face drooping?
πŸ”Ή A – Arms: Can both arms be raised?
πŸ”Ή S – Speech: Is speech slurred or difficult to understand?
πŸ”Ή T – Time: Call 911 immediately if you notice any of these signs.

Throughout Stroke Awareness Month, we recognize the strength and resilience of stroke survivors, caregivers, and families. We also acknowledge the importance of rehabilitation, community support, and ongoing education in helping individuals achieve their recovery goals.

You can help promote awareness by:
πŸ’œ Learning the signs and symptoms of stroke
πŸ’œ Sharing information with family and friends
πŸ’œ Supporting stroke survivors and caregivers
πŸ’œ Encouraging healthy lifestyle choices that can reduce stroke risk
πŸ’œ Participating in awareness initiatives throughout the month

Together, we can increase awareness, improve understanding, and build a more inclusive community for those living with the effects of stroke.

🧠 June is Brain Injury Awareness Month 🧠

June marks the beginning of Brain Injury Awareness Month, a time to increase understanding, reduce stigma, and recognize the millions of people whose lives have been impacted by brain injury.

Brain injuries can happen to anyone, at any age, and may result from a variety of causes, including:
β€’ Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) from falls, motor vehicle collisions, sports injuries, assaults, or workplace accidents
β€’ Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) resulting from stroke, aneurysm, brain tumor, infection, oxygen deprivation, or other medical conditions

Many effects of brain injury are invisible and can impact memory, concentration, fatigue, communication, emotions, mobility, and daily living. Every brain injury is unique, and every recovery journey looks different.

This month, we join the efforts of the Ontario Brain Injury Association (OBIA) in raising awareness and promoting understanding of brain injury across our communities. To show our support, we have changed our cover photo to the virtual Brain Injury Awareness Month flag.

You can help promote awareness by:
πŸ’š Learning about brain injury and its effects
πŸ’š Challenging misconceptions and stigma
πŸ’š Sharing information and resources
πŸ’š Supporting survivors, caregivers, and families
πŸ’š Participating in awareness initiatives throughout the month

Together, we can build a more inclusive and supportive community for individuals living with brain injury.
