Your Chatham-Kent Professional Firefighters are urging residents to use caution during the current flood conditions across the municipality. Rivers and streams are moving quickly, creating dangerous conditions near riverbanks and flooded roadways. Please keep a safe distance from moving water and ensure children stay well clear of these areas.

Our firefighters are committed to protecting this community, but at present our ability to respond to swift water emergencies is limited. Current resources primarily allow for shore-based rescue techniques such as throwing ropes or reaching with poles.

Our members strongly believe that firefighters should have the proper training and equipment to safely perform water rescues when lives are at risk. We remain committed to working toward solutions that strengthen public safety and improve emergency response capabilities in Chatham-Kent.

If you believe your firefighters should have the training and tools needed to respond effectively to water rescue emergencies, please consider sharing your perspective with members of Chatham-Kent Council.

Stay safe and avoid flooded areas!

Thanks to the Chatham Daily News for allowing us the opportunity to highlight this important public safety issue. Our members respond to life-and-death emergencies on our waterways. We want to continue to provide an all-hazards water rescue response; the citizens we protect expect nothing less. Council has already approved this level of service, it’s time our members are provided appropriate equipment and training to make swiftwater rescue capability a reality.
