This week, beginning on Tuesday, The Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission (IRAC) will hold public hearings on Maritime Electric's application to install two 50 megawatt diesel combustion turbines.

Energy Democracy Now! co-operative will present to the commission as a friend of the comission intervener. We will make the case for sound energy planning and raise our concerns with this expensive and rushed fossil fuel power proposal.

IRAC’s go-to experts on energy (Synapse Energy Economics) recommend that the Commission reject Maritime Electric’s proposal for a 100 MW diesel power plant in downtown Charlottetown, and for good reason.

Diesel power plants are more expensive, more pollution-intensive, more water-intensive, and no more reliable or durable than a battery storage alternative.

Plus, Maritime Electric’s proposal would funnel hundreds of millions of dollars out of the Canadian economy, while battery storage would keep ratepayer dollars in Canada.

Better solutions are available, and PEI deserves better.

Today, the New Brunswick Energy and Utilities Board approved a 500 megawatt diesel and gas peaker plant.

The annual 900 000 tonnes of CO2 from this plant will compromise the health of Atlantic Canadians. The plant will divert 7 million litres of groundwater per day from local communities and farms, disrupt the environmental stability of the UNESCO Fundy Biosphere Reserve, and funnel hundreds of millions of dollars out of the Canadian economy to a private American corporation over the next 25 years.

In PEI, the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission (IRAC) is faced with a similar proposal for a 100 megawatt combustion plant on the Charlottetown waterfront. Sign the petition urging IRAC Commissioners to remember environmental stability, affordability, and transparency throughout the decision process.
