Thank you for Walking with us last month! We had an incredible Walk weekend in Charlottetown, Summerside, and Montague. 💙

Whether you joined us in person, supported a team, or made a donation, thank you for showing up!

We’ve been counting every dollar generously donated to support people impacted by dementia, and we are on track to raise $120,000! This would not be possible without the spirit and dedication of every participant, volunteer, and donor. Together, we are making a real difference.

It’s not too late to give! Visit walkpei.ca for more information on how to support Islanders affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

From all of us at the Alzheimer Society of PEI, thank you!

Richard Jamieson recently shared his story at the 2026 IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer's in Charlottetown. He speaks about the importance of more awareness of young onset dementia, and the symptoms those with dementia experience other than memory loss. He is also passionate about the importance and impact of support, like the services he accesses with the Alzheimer Society of PEI, and the need for more funding related to dementia overall.

Richard and his daughter Alex were invited to speak on Compass with Louise Martin, and here is the full recorded segment.

Thank you once again Richard for your courage and bravery in sharing your experience and these messages that are so important for Islanders to hear.

One of our exceptional volunteers, Alison MacDonald, recently received a National Volunteer Award as the Emerging Leader in the Atlantic Region. 🏆

Alison is a community leader who works to bring people together to overcome adversity, solve problems, and strengthen community relations. Alongside her work volunteering at retirement homes with us, she also works with groups such as the Mi'kmaq Confederacy, Kids Help Phone, the Canadian Cancer Society, and countless hospitals and clinics, showing her fundraising efforts and commitment to service and philanthropy. Alison's influence also reaches into the community through her work with Easter Seals, and the Friendship Circle of Newfoundland, organizations that support children and youth living with disabilities, mental health challenges, and social barriers. She leads by example, supports others through challenges, and fosters community which makes her a true emerging leader in Atlantic Canada.

Alongside her recognition, Alison was able to donate a $5000 award contribution to the Alzheimer Society of PEI. We are incredibly grateful to Alison for the work she does and the ways she continues to show up for Islanders impacted by dementia!

In Canada, June is Brain Injury Awareness Month. We know that, depending on a number of factors including injury severity, Traumatic Brain Injuries (commonly referred to as a TBI) can increase the risk of dementia.

We want to use today to bring awareness to this fact. Below are some facts you may not know about brain injuries and dementia:

🧠 A TBI can often affect the overall cognitive functioning of a person and may result in significant challenges with thinking and learning.
🧠 Depending on where the injury occurred in the brain, a TBI can cause symptoms of dementia, including memory, concentration and attention problems, speech and eating problems, and difficulty with balance and coordination.
🧠 Typically, in cases where people develop dementia after a brain injury, the problem is forming new memories or remembering recent events (referred to as “short term memories”). Old memories (or “long term memories”) are typically not affected.
🧠 Older adults are at an increased risk of long-term physical and cognitive changes if they have a serious fall that causes a TBI. Adults over the age of 75 are also considered to be one of the most at-risk age groups for experiencing a TBI.

On June 20th at 9:00am, the Alzheimer Society of PEI’s Charlottetown Walking Group will be participating in a FREE guided trail walk and bird watching activity hosted by the Charlottetown Area Watershed Group! 🌲🐦

This event will replace the regularly scheduled Saturday morning walk for our group that week.

Not a member of our Walking Groups yet? The groups are volunteer-led and open to ALL seniors, meeting on Tuesday and Saturday mornings all year long (weather-dependent). They provide opportunities to connect with others and form friendships, while promoting physical and mental health. Since the groups are dementia friendly, those impacted by dementia have the opportunity to share and stay engaged in the community, and maintain social connections in a supportive environment.

You can register for the group at the link below, or contact our team at 902-628-2257 for support.
