Our May Faces of Farming features O'Faelin Farms!

Leading the way in sustainable agriculture - O'Faelan Farms introduces e-Sheperd virtual fencing to revolutionize rotational grazing on PEI. This cutting-edge approach replaces traditional fencing with electronic collars, allowing cattle to be virtually contained and managed within designated paddocks. The farmplans to start with 120 acres and scale up to over 500 acres in the next few years, showcasing how technology can transform traditional cattle management. This project highlights PEI's growing leadership in adopting smart, sustainable farming solutions for the future.

With support from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's On-Farm Climate Action Fund, Rice Point Farms has been able to improve their efficiency and invest in the farm’s future. Through his projects implementing cover cropping, using enhanced efficiency fertilizers, SWAT mapping, splitting fertilizer applications and installing a liquid fertilizer kit, Tobin Stetson now has the flexibility to use new practices when his crops need it. Looking ahead, Tobin already has ideas for future improvements: “electrical conductivity soil mapping and prescriptive soil sampling are some things I’d like to try next to better manage in-field variabilities”.

Tobin Stetson of Rice Point Farms has officially been farming since 2016, but in reality he's felt like a farmer since he was 10 years old. Tobin works alongside his wife Ellen and their children Gus, Lou and Elsie to grow soybeans, wheat, barley and sweet corn.
Rice Point Farms has been committed to sustainable farming practices for several years, and has been participating in Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF) since the program began. "The OFCAF program has been crucial in providing financial incentives, and the PEIFA has been great to work with and provide advice to farms looking to expand or adopt new practices on PEI".

Our Island farmers are hitting the fields and beginning another planting season - meaning equipment maintenance and soil preparations are top of mind. But a successful year, from planting through harvest, relies on healthy farmers as well.
May 5th is Mental Health in Agriculture Day on PEI, a reminder to the agriculture community to take a moment and check in with their team, their families and themselves ahead of another growing season.
On PEI, farmers, their families and their employees have access to free, 24-hour, confidential mental health services through the FarmersTalk helpline at 1-800-736-8006 or 1-902-894-8006. For more information, head to www.farmerstalk.ca

Advance Payments Program (APP) applications are now available for the 2026 growing season! The interest-free limit of the Advance Payments Program this year has been set to $250,000 for all non-canola advances.

The Advance Payments Program gives producers access to low-cost operating loans, with potential advances of up to $1 million for many commodities. A higher interest free limit or an interest-advantaged rate can result in savings and an increase in cash flow for producers.
For more information or to apply, please visit www.peiapp.ca or reach out to one of our program administrators.
