Island Nature Trust

Island Nature Trust INT is dedicated to acquiring and protecting ecologically important land in PEI.

OUR MISSION:
To create a legacy of natural areas and wildlife habitats for future generations. OUR VISION:
We envision a network of protected natural areas across PEI, sustained by the love and generosity of Islanders today for the enjoyment of Islanders and wildlife tomorrow. WHO WE ARE:
Island Nature Trust is a non-government, not-for-profit organization dedicated to protection and management

of Natural Areas on Prince Edward Island (Canada). We acquire lands to be held in trust for future generations, manage these lands as an example of appropriate and sustained use, and help private owners voluntarily protect their lands. We work with government and private landowners to create a true natural areas network on Prince Edward Island, consisting of core protected areas connected by corridors. In 1979, Island Nature Trust was incorporated as the first private, provincially-based nature trust in Canada. We are governed by a Board of Directors of 12 to 16 members, which includes 8 to 12 members of the Trust and one representative from each of our four founding organizations: Museums and Heritage PEI, PEI Wildlife Federation, Natural History Society of PEI, and the Biology Department of the University of PEI.

💡 Fantastic information to mitigate your environmental impact while using ATVs from our friends at The Nature Trust of New Brunswick.

🚫 This is also a friendly reminder that ATVs and other motorized vehicles are also prohibited on INT owned lands.

🔎 Monitoring our Natural Areas for invasive species takes many approaches. Yesterday we installed one of our emerald ash borer (EAB) traps.

🪲 EAB isn't currently in PEI but it is close! The biggest way you can help keep it out of our province is to make sure to buy and burn local firewood 🔥

Massive thank you to the Holland College Transitions Classes from Souris and Morell for helping us at the new Blair McIntosh Family Natural Area in East Lake! This new roped trail will maintain the beach access and ensure that visitors stay on the designated path through the dune.

In addition to to its ecological significance, the Bovyer Creek Natural Area also contains a rich history of several centuries of ownership by the Bovyer family, including past Premier and Senator Walter Jones.

John Bovyer purchased 895-acres in 1816 which encompassed the land from Fullerton's Creek to Duffy Road. The now protected area was once the site of a shingle mill and dam (dam shown in photo 1), a fox farm (photo 2), a section of the PEI Railway, and the release of white-tailed deer in 1951 (photo 3).

Little is known about the history of the woodland on the property, other than that it seems to be mature forest in a 1926 photo. Stephen Bovyer and his son Franklin established a tree nursery on the farm around 1880. Mr. Jones continued this enterprise, and the Forestry Division of the Department of Industry and Natural Resources was established in 1951 when he was premier. Photo 4 shows B.B. Jones and his wife, Jean, with their dogs in front of one of many planted hedgerows on the property.

Now, Island Nature Trust has started its own open-air nursery of native plants in the retired fields on the Bovyer Creek Natural Area. These plants will be used to diversify species on our properties, including this one.

Thanks to the descendants of the Bovyer family, 28 acres in Bunbury are now protected forever. This property, which sits just outside of Stratford, provides habitat for a variety of wildlife in an area with expanding development.

The Bovyer Creek Natural Area features riparian forest and salt marsh on both Bovyer Creek and Fullerton's Creek, which connects to the Hillsborough River estuary. It contains two retired organic agriculture fields which have begun to naturally return to forest. The existing woodland consists of mature mixedwood species, including red maple, white spruce, trembling aspen, and balsam fir.

This property was a partial donation with a portion of the land's value being purchased with funding from the Government of Prince Edward Island. Thank you to the Bovyer descendants for making this possible; especially Joyce Dewar, a past INT Board member, for leading the family's donation and providing historical write-ups, maps, and photos.

Happy World Migratory Bird Day!

Today we celebrate the journey that many birds take, and the thousands of kilometres they fly across many continents. This day is aimed to connect people, organizations, and communities by emphasizing the importance of bird conservation and a shared responsibility to protect ecosystems and maintain biodiversity.
