PEI Watershed Alliance

PEI Watershed Alliance The Prince Edward Island Watershed Alliance (PEIWA) is non-profit cooperative association of watershed management groups on Prince Edward Island, Canada

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

• Access to clean, safe water is a fundamental human right and essential for the physical, social and economic well-being of all Prince Edward Island residents

• Environmental stewardship is at the forefront of the work of the Alliance; water conservation and water quality issues must be considered in the global context and related to other environmental issues such as climate

change

• Each member watershed group is autonomous; its capacity to develop and achieve its own goals must be respected

• Successful action depends on willingness to engage communities and to work collaboratively with other community-based organizations and sectors including, but not limited to, agriculture, fishing and shell-fishing, forestry, community or municipal councils, and tourism

• Active participation of member watershed groups is essential for the success of the Alliance

• Member groups are equal in status, regardless of size or number of years in existence

OBJECTIVES

• Serve as a strong, representative voice for community-based watershed organizations

• Support new and existing watershed groups in their development

• Support all watershed groups to carry out the work they have defined as necessary to improve and protect the environmental quality of their watersheds

• promote and improve communication and cooperation between watershed groups in P.E.I.

• Facilitate opportunities for watershed groups to collaborate on the provision of training and services

• Ensure that watershed planning and conservation efforts are taking place in all P.E.I. watersheds

• Ensure that issues affecting the environmental quality of our watersheds are addressed

• Provide input into public policy and programs that support conservation, protection and enhancement of Prince Edward Island’s watersheds

• Create public awareness of watershed issues and of the role of individuals and community in addressing those issues

Recently, watershed groups across the Island participated in Wilderness and Remote First Aid Training delivered by Adventure and Safety Atlantic.

Unlike traditional first aid courses, wilderness first aid focuses on responding to emergencies when help may not be close and resources are limited. Participants worked through realistic scenarios, learned how to assess and manage injuries in remote environments, and practiced using available materials to provide care until additional help arrives.

From improvised splints to hands-on emergency response scenarios, participants gained valuable skills and confidence to help keep themselves and others safe while working in the field.

A huge thank you to the instructors at Adventure and Safety Atlantic and to everyone who participated in this valuable training!

Happy Earth Day 🌎

Today is a reminder that the health of our watersheds shapes everything around us, from the rivers we restore to the communities that rely on them.

Across PEI, wetlands, forests, and streams are doing quiet, essential work every day: filtering water, supporting wildlife, and protecting our coastlines.

Taking care of them doesn’t have to be big or complicated.

It can be as simple as picking up litter, staying on trails, or learning more about the land and water around you.

Small actions add up, especially when a whole community gets involved.

What’s one thing you’re doing for the environment today?

Restoration is a big part of the work that watershed groups do across PEI 🌱, and these projects, supported by the Aquatic Ecosystems Restoration Fund (AERF), show what that looks like in action.

On the Wheatley River, the Wheatley River Improvement Group reconnected the river to its floodplain above Rackham’s Pond. The historic dam in this location and a cycle of sediment infilling and mechanical dredging to restore the pond had cut the river off from its floodplain. By reshaping the riverbank, water can now spread out during high flows, reducing erosion and helping sediment settle on land instead of in the pond or being carried downstream.

At Stordy’s Pond, the South Shore Watershed Association improved fish passage on the Westmoreland River 🐟. They did this by creating resting pools and redirecting fish away from a dam structure and towards a previously installed fishway. Directing fish toward the easiest path upstream will reduce fish deaths that previously occurred in this location when some fish made a wrong turn and then couldn’t find their way upstream. This project improves access to over 11 km of habitat.

These projects are helping restore natural processes, improve fish habitat, and protect the long-term health of PEI’s waterways 🌎.
