Finally, we’re excited to share our last student project participating in Canada’s History National Showcase – Darwin Ziolaberry’s project entitled “Eleanor Harvey and Fencing.”

Being a fencer herself, École François-Buote’s student Ziolaberry was moved to choose Canadian fencer Eleanor Harvey as her student project: “She inspires me to work harder and follow my dreams," said Ziolaberry.

Eleanor Harvey made Canadian history by winning Canada’s first ever Olympic medal in fencing in Paris’ 2024 summer Olympics. In her student project, Ziolaberry provided a brief history of fencing, discussed the equipment and technology used in the sport, and gave an overview on the rules of engagement.

Ziolaberry drew upon her personal experience with the sport for her research, and will even get the chance this summer to meet Harvey!

To tune in to Ziolaberry’s conversation with CBC’s Nicola MacLeod, please visit their website. (Meta auto-deletes CBC links in our posts now, sorry!)

To view Ziolaberry’s project: visit her profile at https://www.canadashistory.ca/youth/heritage-fairs-en/heritage-fair-national-showcase/national-showcase-profiles/2026/darwin-z

We are SO SO proud of the students representing PEI at the National Showcase!

Continuing our featured posts on PEI heritage fair projects, we’re excited to introduce you to Ben Docherty!

Hailing from Belfast Consolidated School, Ben titled his project “Air Canada Flight 143 (The Gimli Glider). Docherty’s project focused on the successful emergency landing that Flight 143 made in Gimli, Manitoba in 1983.

With a passion for aviation history, Docherty’s research was driven by his curiosity to understand why the incident occurred in the first place. His research revealed that Canada had recently switch from imperial to metric and a fueling miscalculation occurred.

“This event is really a silver lining moment in aviation. Had this not happened, many other events that could have been way worse, was prevented by this incident.”

Docherty also had a particularly unique primary source: he managed to get a hold of a retired RCMP officer and eye witness, Bob Munro. To learn more about Docherty’s experience with his research, visit his project profile at https://www.canadashistory.ca/youth/heritage-fairs-en/heritage-fair-national-showcase/national-showcase-profiles/2026/benjamin-d

🕰️ It's Collection Facility Feature time!

"Catherine Clemintine Carruthers Lewis, better known as Katie, was born in 1874 in Cardigan, PEI. When her mother died in 1884, Katie was sent to the Notre Dame Academy in Charlottetown for her education. Katie became well known for her culinary delights after she married William M. Flynn, a CNR Station Agent. In 1930 Katie became involved with the St. Elizabeth’s Aid Society of St. Vincent’s Orphanage. At this time, the idea for a fundraising cookbook was raised to help pay for the Orphanage's new boiler.

The cookbook was originally printed by the Irwin Printing Company in Charlottetown and 1,000 copies were made. The cookbook was a success and raised $1,000 for the charity. When the PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation reprinted "Mrs. Flynn’s Cookbook" in 1981, Catherine Hennessey noted the impact this book had on the Island's 20th century households. For many this was an introduction to recipes such as Mock Duck, Pineapple Stuffed Baked Tomatoes, and Sultana Cake!"
