If you’re camping this summer, take note of disposal instructions for these commonly used items:
➡️ Styrofoam cooler: All Styrofoam goes in waste.
➡️ Batteries: All rechargeable and non-rechargeable batteries must be disposed of safely and are not collected curbside. They can be dropped off at IWMC’s Waste Watch Drop-Off Centers or at other Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! drop off locations (free of charge).
➡️ Propane tank: For tanks weighing 30 lbs or less, residents may take to a propane tank exchange location or to a Waste Watch Drop-Off Center.
➡️ Tent: Metal tent poles are recyclable (they should be bundled for collection and they must meet the guidelines for weight and dimension). The fabric (nylon, tarp, etc.) is waste.
➡️ Beverage bottles and cans: Metal cans and plastic bottles with a recyclable symbol and a #1-5 go in blue bag #2 (must be clean and dry).

Trash Talk With Tots: Episode 2 (Rejections)
Max asks the big question: Why do carts sometimes get a red tag?
When compostable materials, recyclable items, or stewardship program items end up in your waste cart - they can take up valuable space in the landfill and contribute to negative environmental impacts.

While our team works hard to ensure the safety of our environment, contamination makes that work much harder and more costly.
If you have found a rejection tag on your cart, your first step can be to ask for help. You can reach out to our customer service team to discuss what may have been wrong in the cart that led to rejection so we can help you correct it in the future.

We know that a missed collection is inconvenient, but we also hope that helping educate Island residents on WHY a rejection happens will help us all take better care of our Island.

We encourage you to reach out if you have questions, and download the Recycle Coach App to assist you with your sorting.

Max joined the IWMC team for the day to tour the landfill and ask questions any 6 year old would have!
A common misconception is that “all garbage goes to the same place anyway, so why does sorting matter?”

As Max finds out, our team works hard to ensure items are disposed of properly, and when possible – keep them out of the landfill and have their life extended through composting, recycling, energy renewal strategies and stewardship programs.
We know that source separation isn’t always easy – with the help of Max (and Islanders who are eager to take care of our home) let’s make it a bit easier to understand.

Just one battery can cause big problems in our landfill - let’s talk about it! 🔋
Batteries landing in our landfill can cause problems including fires - we’ve already had a few this year. These fires are not only dangerous for our team, but can happen in your collection cart and in collection vehicles.
If you are disposing of batteries weighing less than 10 lbs (5 kg), please take them to a Recycle Your Batteries Canada collection box. These are available at most grocery stores, libraries, and all Waste Watch Drop-off Centers.
Find the nearest location here: https://recycleyourbatteries.ca/
Batteries weighing more than 10 lbs (5 kg) must be taken to one of our Waste Watch Drop-Off Centers.
It may seem like one small battery won’t make a difference—but it can, and it does.
In our next video, Elizabeth will share tips on how to safely store batteries and prepare them for collection.
If you have questions about sorting batteries or any other item, visit our interactive sorting guide: https://iwmc.pe.ca/sort/
