PEI Human Rights Commission

PEI Human Rights Commission We believe that education is key to eliminating barriers and preventing discrimination from happening in the first place.

We are an independent agency that is responsible for educating the public about human rights and enforcing the PEI Human Rights Act through a complaint process. Individuals, businesses, and organizations are welcome to call the Commission if they have questions about their human rights, their responsibilities under the Act, or to book an education session. We are also responsible for reviewing com

plaints of discrimination. When a complaint is filed, we help parties attempt to resolve their dispute through mediation and settlement discussions. If not resolved at an early stage, we investigate to determine whether the allegation has merit. In some cases, it is necessary to hold a public hearing to determine whether the complaint of discrimination has been established. We are proud to live and work in Epekwitk (PEI), the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people whom we respect as the original stewards of this land.

What is the role of a Commissioner?

Commissioners are decision makers of the PEI HRC. Commissioners conduct hearings, listen to evidence, and make final decisions on complaints that are sent to a Panel Hearing. They also conduct reviews of decisions to dismiss complaints.

In this photo, Commissioners Andrew, Carolyn and Jean celebrate human rights at an HRC event.

Did you know?

Mental health conditions fall under the protected ground of disability in PEI's Human Rights Act. This means that Islanders living with mental health conditions have the right to be free from discrimination in employment, housing, services, and more.

On average, 30% of closed cases are resolved through mediation.

Human rights disputes can be stressful. The Commission supports a flexible dispute-resolution process to address the harm and resolve the complaint.

Opportunities for dispute resolution and mediation are available throughout a human rights process.
