Join us in welcoming Bukola Afolabi to the team as our new RISE Legal Navigator!

Bukola (she/her) brings 8 years of experience in Women’s Human Rights, Gender Based Violence, Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights, Access to Justice, and Training and Capacity Development. She cares deeply about supporting survivors as they find their way through the justice system.

In her new role, Bukola will work with people who have experienced sexual violence or intimate partner violence by:

📖 Sharing clear legal information
🤝 Connecting people with community supports
⚖️ Helping people meet with a lawyer

There is no one right path forward after harm. Our Legal Navigators are here to help people understand their options, answer their questions, and feel supported in whatever they choose to do next.

If Bukola could share one message with survivors, it would be this:

"Ask questions and seek help as soon as possible."

And when she's not working, you'll find Bukola cooking, spending time with her family, helping people, and having impactful conversation.

Welcome to the team, Bukola!

Today, we joined the Premier’s Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention for their annual Walk in Silence.

We are always grateful for the opportunity to connect with allies, survivors, and advocates who are working to end family violence.

This walk is an important reminder that everyone deserves to feel safe at home and in their relationships.

Abuse is never okay, whether it is emotional, physical, or financial.

If you or someone you know needs support, help is available.

Family Violence Prevention Week is happening from May 11 to 17. This year’s theme is “Supporting Intergenerational Resilience in Our Communities.”

This theme reminds us that safety, healing, and support can grow across generations. Families and communities can learn from one another, share strengths, and work together to create lasting change over time.

Across PEI, there are events happening throughout the week to raise awareness about family violence prevention. We invite you to take a look at the full schedule here: www.StopFamilyViolence.pe.ca

We’ve reached a milestone, and we want to pause and say thank you. As of this month, we’ve connected over 1,500 clients to free legal information, advice, and support.

We are deeply grateful to every client who has trusted us to be part of their journey.

Our program launched six years ago. We provide legal information and advice to people who have experienced sexual violence, intimate partner violence, or workplace sexual harassment.

We could not do this work without the strong support of our community.

We also want to thank our partners and funders who continue to stand beside us. Their support helps make these services more accessible across Prince Edward Island.

Today we are saying thank you and goodbye to our RISE Legal Navigator, Kathy. She has been an integral part of our team since October 2021.

Kathy supported people across PEI who have experienced sexual violence, intimate partner violence, or workplace sexual harassment. She offered clear legal information, support navigating the justice system, and referrals to other important services.

She always focused on meeting clients where they are and helping them understand their options. We are grateful for Kathy’s kindness, dedication, and the support she has provided to so many people.

We wish her all the best in what comes next!

This week, the Disclosure to Protect Against Intimate Partner Violence Act unanimously passed second reading in the PEI Legislature.

Also known as Clare’s Law, this law will let people ask the police if a partner has a history of abusive behaviour. It gives people important information to help them stay safe and make decisions with confidence.

We commend Tammy Sanderson and MLA Carolyn Simpson for advocating for this legislation, and congratulate everyone who contributed to its development.

If you are experiencing intimate partner violence, know that you are not alone. Support is available, and you do not have to face this on your own.

We provide support for survivors of gender-based violence. If you need help understanding your legal options, we're here for you.

A publication ban is a court order that limits what information can be shared publicly about a case. In 2023, changes were made to the Criminal Code to strengthen survivors’ rights.

The law now makes it clearer when a publication ban applies, including the rules about consent and lifting a ban. These changes aim to give survivors more control.

In sexual assault cases, publication bans are used to protect a survivor’s privacy by preventing the sharing of identifying information.

Identifying information can include:
🪪 Your name or address
📍 Where the offence happened
👥 Your relationship to the accused
⚖️ The accused’s name, if it could identify you

Publication bans to protect survivors of sexual offences are mandatory. This means a judge must order one if the survivor, their lawyer, or the Crown asks for it.

The accused’s opinion is not considered.

Our publications have been updated to reflect the 2023 Criminal Code changes, so survivors have clear, current information about their rights and options.

We understand the legal system can feel overwhelming, especially for people who have experienced trauma.

Trauma impacts how people think, feel, and cope. Everyone’s experience is different. That’s why trauma-informed lawyering is so important.

Every lawyer in our referral service completes trauma-informed training. We believe in a justice system that is compassionate, inclusive, and trauma-aware.
