✨ Look Up Tonight ✨

Over the next few nights, increased solar activity may bring the northern lights dancing across the skies of Discovery Global Geopark!

While we’re usually focused on the incredible stories beneath our feet - ancient fossils, dramatic sea arches, towering cliffs, and rocks that formed half a billion years ago, tonight we’ll have our eyes to the sky.

The northern lights, or aurora borealis, occur when charged particles from the Sun interact with Earth’s magnetic field, creating a glowing green horizon and sometimes even ribbons of light that appear to dance across the sky. During periods of increased solar activity, those displays can be visible farther south than usual, including right here on the Bonavista Peninsula.

If the sky is clear, find a safe, dark spot, look north, and keep your eyes on the horizon. You never know what might appear!

From ancient fossils beneath your feet to dancing lights above your head, this place is full of reminders that we’re part of something much bigger than ourselves! ✨

We’d love to see Discovery Geopark through your lens!
If you’re lucky enough to catch the aurora, share your photos with us below 👇

Millions of years of geological history and thousands of years of relentless wave action have shaped one of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most iconic coastal features.

Located in Dungeon Provincial Park in Bonavista, The Dungeon began as a sea cave with two separate openings to the ocean. Over time, waves worked their way into natural fractures in the rock, gradually enlarging the cave until its roof collapsed, creating the dramatic feature visitors see today. A collapsed sea cave like this is known as a gloup.

But while The Dungeon is definitely a “main attraction” it’s only part of the story. The surrounding cliffs, sea stacks, caves, and rugged shoreline reveal a landscape that continues to be shaped by wind, waves, storms, and tides. Every crashing wave continues a process that has been sculpting this coastline for thousands of years.

Today, Dungeon Provincial Park welcomes visitors from around the world to experience this remarkable place. Discovery UNESCO Global Geopark is proud to work alongside ParksNL and community partners to help protect, interpret, and share the natural and cultural heritage of our region.

This work supports sustainable tourism, helps protect important natural and cultural places for future generations, and highlights the value of partnerships between communities, organizations, and governments working together.

They don’t call it Iceberg Alley for nothing! As the ‘bergs roll in, it’s a great time to get out enjoy the view… from a safe distance, of course.

Icebergs can be unstable and unpredictable, sometimes rolling or breaking apart without warning. It can be a very dangerous situation for anyone in the water nearby. If you’re viewing from a vessel on the water, be sure it’s from a safe distance and choose a reputable operator who knows the area well.

Prefer to spot them from shore? Stay at least 100 metres back, obey all signage and come prepared. Shorelines and rocks can be slippery. Proper footwear, warm clothing and being aware of your surroundings can help keep your visit safe.

Icebergs are a remarkable sight to behold for locals and tourists alike - visit the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s official resource at icebergfinder.com for a full list of where to safely find the best ‘bergs of the season!
