Heads up to Jackfish Lake residents and property owners, the Holborn Area Community Crime Watch Association which includes the Jackfish Lake area is hosting our 2026 AGM on Sunday afternoon February 22.

As rural Alberta continues to face challenges with increasing levels of property crime, the need for Crime Watch programs has never been greater. However we have unfortunately seen declining engagement and support for Crime Watch over the past few years. We had poor attendance at our last two AGMs, and while we welcome more individuals to get engaged with us, our Board presently only has six members on it. While our association remains committed to the concept of rural crime prevention, we cannot do this alone and need more residents to step up and get involved. Otherwise our association could cease to exist.

If you reside in or own property within our crime watch area—which extends from Highway 779 west to Highway 770, including Jackfish Lake, and from the North Saskatchewan River north to Highway 628—we urge you to join us for our AGM. We also ask that you encourage your neighbours to attend.

Our AGM will be held at Holborn Hall starting at 2 p.m. We’ll have refreshments and door prizes up for grabs. if you are not yet a member of our association, we will also have membership applications at the meeting. Holborn Hall is located south off Highway 627 at Range Road 13 (51132 Range Rd 13; west of corner of TWP Rd 512 and RR 13).

Crime prevention is in all of our best interests, and there is strength in numbers as we work together to deter crime in our community.

Just an update on the concerns raised about invasive plant species.

The JLMA completed our August round of water quality testing with ALMS and gathered two samples of the Watermilfoil. This is an invasive species, but is not new to Jackfish. ALMS indicated there is very little, if anything can be done considering this is an aquatic invasive plant.

EDIT: I got a call from ALMS shortly after posting and they helped be differentiate between Northern Milfoil (not an invasive species) and Eurasian Milfoil. Based on their initial analysis of the samples we took the do NOT believe them to be Eurasian Milfoil, but will proceed with lab analysis to confirm.

ALMS has a good PDF of aquatic vegitation and shows the difference between Eurasian and Northern Milfoil.
