🌱 How are the lupins looking?

The 2026 lupin variety trials at the Parkland Crop Diversification Foundation (PCDF) in Roblin include three species: narrow leaf, sweet white, and yellow lupins.

MPSG Production Agronomist Wendy McDonald took a closer look at the crop on June 3 to assess emergence, growth stages, and some unusual symptoms being observed in the field.

From understanding lupin emergence and the role of cotyledons to investigating browning, wind damage, and potential disease concerns, this field update dives into what’s happening below and above the soil surface.

The lupins will continue to be monitored as the season progresses. 🌱

"It's a busy life, but it's lots of fun too."
For Manitoba farm families, spring seeding season means 18-hour days, meals on the go, and quality time with the kids that usually happens in a tractor cab.

Tyler and Kate kindly welcomed us to their farm near Carman, Manitoba, during seeding season. It was a wonderful opportunity to see their dedication and teamwork firsthand, highlighting the care that goes into growing food.

🌱 Finding cutworms in soybeans? Don’t panic — scout first!

In our latest agronomy update, MPSG Production Agronomist Wendy McDonald takes a closer look at cutworm activity in Manitoba soybean fields. While some feeding damage was found, further scouting showed the field was not at the economic threshold for treatment.

The article explores:
🔎 How to scout for cutworms
🐛 When insecticide treatment may be needed
🌿 The role of natural beneficial insects (thanks Mother Nature!)
🌱 How seed treatments can help protect emerging soybeans

Remember: finding a cutworm doesn’t always mean action is needed — proper scouting and thresholds are key.

🌱 Hail… Unifoliate Stage Soybeans… Re-Seeding??

Hail can leave soybean fields with some tough decisions to make — especially when soybeans are still young and at the unifoliate (VC) stage.

After a June 2 hail event south of Ste. Rose, MPSG Production Agronomist Wendy McDonald took a closer look at damaged soybean fields to assess which plants could recover and which ones were unlikely to make it.

So… how do you decide whether to keep the stand or re-seed?

🌱 Check for viable growing points — soybeans need at least one node to regrow from
🔍 Count surviving plants — not just what’s visible above ground
📏 Assess yield potential and field uniformity
📅 Consider seeding deadlines, moisture, heat units, and available seed

In this case, field assessments showed the recovering plant stand was too low to maintain yield potential. After considering all factors, the decision was made to re-seed.

🚜🌱 The 2026 On-Farm Network season is well underway!

Our team, alongside Tone Ag Consulting Ltd. and New Era Ag Technologies, has been busy establishing field-scale research trials across Manitoba to help answer real-world production questions on farmers’ fields.

This year’s trials are evaluating a wide range of management practices in soybeans, field peas, dry beans, and faba beans, including seeding rates, seeding speed, row spacing, inoculation strategies, rolling timing, starter fertilizer, biostimulants, and more.

📊 As of May 27:
✅ 75% of soybean trials established
✅ 100% of pea trials established
✅ 100% of faba bean trials established
⏳ Dry bean trials coming soon

These on-farm trials play an important role in generating practical, local research that helps Manitoba growers make informed management decisions.

Stay tuned throughout the season as we share updates, observations, and results from the field!

Please join us in welcoming Jared Bento to the Manitoba Pulse & Soybean Growers team as our new Research Specialist!

Born and raised in Manitoba, Jared brings a strong background in crop research, agronomy, and extension. His experience spans roles with Haplotech Inc., Bayer Crop Science, the University of Manitoba’s canola breeding program, and most recently Manitoba Canola Growers, where he led on-farm research, variety trials, data analysis, and farmer extension initiatives.

Jared has already hit the ground running, working on a special soybean protein stability project, and will also be supporting our On-Farm Network, Variety Trials, field days, and agronomy extension programs.

When he’s not in the field or analyzing data, you’ll find Jared tending to his ever-growing home garden or enjoying a weekend of WRC rally racing.

Welcome to the team, Jared! We’re excited to have you on board and look forward to the expertise and enthusiasm you’ll bring to Manitoba’s pulse and soybean industry.
