Mississippi Lakes Association

Mississippi Lakes Association https://www.mlakes.org/about-us For as long as anyone can remember, the locals have spoken of four different sections of the lake as separate "lakes".

OUR NAME...
You might have noticed that there is only one Lake Mississippi on the map, although we call ourselves the Mississippi LAKES Association. They each have unique topography, charm, and character. First Lake starts at the Highway 7 bridge at Carleton Place and ends at the first narrowing off Lake Park;

Second Lake is the wide section of the lake from Lake Park to the narrows starting off

Kings Bay;

The Narrows continue from there until the lake widens again off Black Bass Bay; and

The Big Lake is the deepest and largest part of the lake, ending at the Highway 7 bridge at Innisville. And so the mystery is solved. We find it convenient to speak of these four "lakes", and trust that you too will come to know and enjoy them by their informal names. Have fun out there - whichever lake you happen to be on!

This weekend our weather was wet, as we held our lake's Annual General Meeting.
Our members heard about the restructuring of Conservative Authorities, plus updates from Beckwith and Drummond/North Elmsley.
Several board members were re-elected. The budget remains steady, with expenses just under $10 thousand. We reported on water quality, loon counts, lead sinkers, road associations, our membership survey, and our yellow buoys.

Hi, would you be interested in joining our board?
Our lake association annual meeting takes place this Saturday morning. We look for people who are interested in discussing lake issues, have a bit of volunteer experience, are able to organize projects and/or represent the lake community.
We meet for 2-hours, about 10-times per year. Plus time for any project work, and e-mail correspondence.

It might still be a little cool (and windy) for most of us to be swimming and boarding in our lake.
So let's look for hiking trails within 5-10 km.

- Ottawa Valley Recreational Trail runs from SF into CP and beyond
- Poole Family Nature Sanctuary is on 11th Concession, just west of Scotch Corners (new parking, rugged trail)
- New yellow & blue trails are on Code Road, just south of the D/NE waste disposal site
- Roy Brown Park starts at the Lake Ave West boatlaunch, running toward MVCA
- Goodwood & Shady Branch trails start at Beckwith Park and School on 9th Line

Perhaps there are others?

Mississippi Lake is a great place!

We LOVE the water, the birds, the fish, and the recreation opportunities. BUT some have concerns about water quality, water levels, over-fishing, and aquatic plants (weeds).

We LOVE the location, the history, the people, and the memories. BUT some have concerns about noise, road access, services, and taxes.

We LOVE the views, the nature, the open skies, and watching the weather. BUT some have concerns about too many people, too many boats, and too much development.

Launching a boat in Mississippi Lake? Here's some useful info:

* Please don't use lead fishing weights -- Tests show they poison the loons
* Ensure your boat is cleaned, drained & dried -- Stop the spread of invasive species
* Know your fishing season & limits, for FMZ-18 -- Fish conservation is important
* The lake is quite shallow -- Sailboats with keels could run aground.
* Wake boats with heavy ballast will damage the bottom -- Look for a larger lake
* Stay 30 meters / 100 feet from our yellow cautionary buoys -- There be rocks
* Know "rules of the road" -- Stay clear of other boats & shorelines, unless going slow
* Our "Narrows" get busy on summer weekends -- Stay clear of boats & swimmers
* There are three public boat launches -- at Lake Avenue, Loon Lane, and Drummond Conc 9-A
* Unfortunately the only public beaches are on the river in Carleton Place
* Lifejacket ON -- if the water is cold, if you're alone, if not a strong swimmer, or anytime!

LET'S NOT FEED THE DUCKS!

Wildlife experts warn against feeding ducks, as it harms the birds, creates dependency, spreads diseases, and pollutes the water.

Feeding will cause poor nutrition and spreads diseases. Ducks lose their fear of humans, leading to increased danger from traffic, unnatural behaviour, and inability to forage naturally.

Duck p**p has phosphorus and nitrogen, contributing to algae blooms and aquatic plants. Duck f***s contaminate the water with E. Coli bacteria, leading to poor water quality, and attracting pests.

It is always best to let wild animals forage for their own natural food!

Our unmistakable yellow buoys are back on Mississippi Lake, just on time for the weekend!

Boaters should make sure to stay 30 m / 100 ft away. And never pass between two adjacent buoys.
