Mississippi River Gathering Place-Misi Zibi Mamidosewin

Mississippi River Gathering Place-Misi Zibi Mamidosewin This is a space for Indigenous ceremony and reflection on the story of Indigenous presence at Riverside Park in Carleton Place.

04/22/2026

After meeting with the committee yesterday we are go for ground breaking this summer with completion of the 4 Direction Stones estimated to be before September 30th.

This installation will serve to support the presence, both current and historical, of the Algonquin people along this centuries old travel and trade route. It will be a powerful presence next to the river.

Soon the stones will be selected, the area well mapped out and we will begin the process of bringing this vision to life. A plaque detailing the meaning behind the symbols on the installation will help to provide education and awareness of the importance of the land and water we are standing on.

This hard working committee (past and present) has been an integral component in the successful implementation of this installation project.

For further information on this project, you can scroll back through the posts where there are details of the plan. If you have any questions please email us at [email protected]

On behalf of the Misi Zibi Mamidosewin 4 Direction Stones Planning Committee thank you for your continued support for this project.

Now that we have secured funding for the installation, we will be meeting to determine a ground breaking date and will smudge and offer to***co for a successful and uneventful ground-breaking.

We'll post a notice of this event as far in advance as we can to ensure everyone has an opportunity to attend.

Miigwetch. Thank you for your continued support as we begin the last leg of this remarkable installation to acknowledge the past and current existence of the Algonquin people on this unceded territory that we share.

Thank you Town of Carleton Place!

Christmas came early for the Misi Zibi Mamidosewin "4 Directions Stones" project and this summer construction will be underway thanks to the Town of Carleton Place. The Town has approved the full funding amount required to build the installation project at Riverside Park in 2026.

The 4 Directions Stones installation acknowledges the historical relationship between the Algonquin people and the Carleton Place settler community along the beautiful Mississippi River's travel and trade route.

The project has been 3 years in the making and will finally be executed this summer by WRC Contracting from Almonte.

The committee is deeply grateful to the Town of Carleton Place for embracing this plan so it can be brought to life in our beautiful park. Thank you to all who have followed and supported this remarkable undertaking. We're very excited to see this progress.

The planning committee of the Misi Zibi Mamidosewin "4 Directions Stones" installation has secured WRC Contracting https://wrccontracting.com/ to get this project in the ground. We are very grateful for their enthusiasm and technical skills. WRC Is responsible for the 7 Gifts installation in Almonte.

We have determined that the initial plan had to be modified for safety, but this new layout only enhances the power of this educational installation to honour the current and historic presence of the Algonquin Nation along the banks of the Mississippi River. We will showcase the modified design as soon as possible.

We have determined that we will need to raise $25,000.00 for this installation and will be working on creating a platform for this to happen. If you or your organization would like to help us raise these funds, please reach out to Joanne Henderson, Town of Carleton Place Manager of Recreation & Culture at [email protected] to donate.

We will update you as things progess. Please feel free to contact us at [email protected]

Update Aug 8 2025:
We are meeting with contractors early next week to map out a plan and an estimate for the installation. As things progress we will keep everyone updated. Thanks for your patience everyone. From an engineering standpoint, this is no small thing that we're undertaking but we are working towards presenting Carleton Place with an installation that holds deep meaning and will become a place of learning and understanding along the banks of our beautiful Mississippi River.
