Interpretive Guides Association

Interpretive Guides Association We provide interpretive guide training, certification and development for people working in this industry.

WHAT WE DO
The Interpretive Guides Association (formally Mountain Parks Heritage Interpretation Association) is a professional body representing interpretive guides who connect people to Canada’s mountain parks. We believe that meaningful and memorable experiences in the parks can be fostered by experiences with professionally accredited interpreters. These interpreters weave the local natural and

cultural history into engaging stories that help people feel a personal connection to mountain landscapes and cultures in Canada. Like any professionals, interpreters need professional representation, accreditation and on-going opportunities for learning and discovery. The Interpretive Guides Association provides services that support guides and ensure visitors to the mountain parks have enjoyable, safe and memorable experiences in the parks.

🌸 Meet one of the Rockies’ enchanting wildflowers: the Calypso Orchid (Calypso bulbosa)

Also known as the “Fairy Slipper,” this tiny orchid may look delicate, but it survives in some surprisingly harsh mountain environments.

Fun interpretive facts:
✨ The name Calypso comes from Greek mythology — Calypso was a sea nymph known for beauty and mystery.
✨ Unlike many flowers, Calypso Orchids don’t offer nectar to pollinators. They “trick” bees into visiting with their bright colours and patterns!
✨ A single plant may take years to flower, making each bloom extra special.
✨ They rely on underground fungi to survive, especially when young. Without healthy forest soils, they can’t grow.
✨ Picking or stepping near them can damage the fragile plant and soil network they depend on.

Have you seen any of these beauties in bloom yet? Watch for them from late may into June.

May is Asian Heritage Month. As guides, it’s an opportunity to explore how Asian communities have helped shape Canadian history and to find thoughtful, engaging ways to share these stories with guests.

One example is the Last Spike of the Canadian Pacific Railway. While often celebrated as a nation-building moment, it also carries a more complex history -- including the vital contributions and hardships of Chinese railway workers. Taking time to understand and share these perspectives can deepen the stories we tell.
