Bow Valley Palliative We depend on our community volunteers and fundraising initiatives.

Providing palliative and grief supports within the Bow Valley and Improving the end of life experience for individuals and their families following a life-changing diagnosis. In the spring of 2014, a group was called together under the leadership of Lynn Cooper with the goal of establishing a hospice in the Bow Valley. The group continued to meet regularly and the vision expanded to include the development of a โ€œcompassionate communityโ€, working alongside the current health and social services to support those with a life-limiting illness, and their families, throughout their journey. Under the groupโ€™s direction, the โ€œPalliative Care Society of the Bow Valleyโ€ (PCSBV) was conceived. Development of a compassionate community soon grew to include the idea of constructing a palliative care house in Canmore for Bow Valley communities. The PCSBV is now a vibrant registered charity with a new Board of Directors charting that course for the future.

Today is World Hospice and Palliative Care Day.

This yearโ€™s theme, โ€œ๐๐š๐ข๐ง ๐Œ๐š๐ง๐š๐ ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ: ๐€๐ง ๐„๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐š๐ฅ ๐๐š๐ซ๐ญ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž ๐‚๐š๐ซ๐ž,โ€ reminds us that everyone living with a serious illness deserves compassionate care that supports comfort, dignity and quality of life.

Here in the Bow Valley, that belief guides both the services we provide today and the future we are working toward. As progress continues on the Pestell Centre for Compassionate Care, we are building more than a physical space. We are creating a sustainable home for palliative care, grief and bereavement support, caregiver support, education and connectionโ€”closer to home for individuals and families across our community.

Caregiving, dementia, grief and love are experiences many families carry quietly.

Weโ€™re pleased to share this meaningful event hosted by our friends at Canmore Public Library. Author, social worker and researcher Fay Martin will speak about her memoir, ๐‘ซ๐’†๐’Ž๐’†๐’๐’•๐’Š๐’‚ ๐‘พ๐’Š๐’…๐’๐’˜, drawing from the fifteen years she spent caring for her late husband as dementia reshaped their lives.

Her honest story offers understanding, comfort and practical insight for caregivers, those supporting someone living with dementia, and anyone navigating grief and loss.

Today is a time to honour the children who never returned home, Survivors of residential schools, and their families and communities. It is also an opportunity to listen, learn and reflect on the ongoing impacts of residential schools and our individual and collective responsibilities toward meaningful reconciliation.

We encourage everyone to take time today to deepen their understanding of this history and learn about the actions we can take toward reconciliation.
