Bow Valley Palliative

Bow Valley Palliative We depend on our community volunteers and fundraising initiatives.

Providing palliative and grief supports within the Bow Valley and Improving the end of life experience for individuals and their families following a life-changing diagnosis. In the spring of 2014, a group was called together under the leadership of Lynn Cooper with the goal of establishing a hospice in the Bow Valley. The group continued to meet regularly and the vision expanded to include the de

velopment of a “compassionate community”, working alongside the current health and social services to support those with a life-limiting illness, and their families, throughout their journey. Under the group’s direction, the “Palliative Care Society of the Bow Valley” (PCSBV) was conceived. Development of a compassionate community soon grew to include the idea of constructing a palliative care house in Canmore for Bow Valley communities. The PCSBV is now a vibrant registered charity with a new Board of Directors charting that course for the future.

Different types of dementia can affect memory, language, behaviour, movement, decision-making, and daily life in different ways. Understanding these differences can help families recognize changes earlier and seek support sooner.

At Bow Valley Palliative, we see firsthand the impact dementia can have on individuals and those who care for them. Through our Dementia Care Team and community partnerships, we are committed to helping people navigate these challenges with compassion and understanding.

Grief can feel heavy, isolating, and hard to put into words. Sometimes, simply being outside, walking beside others, and taking space to breathe can help.

This summer, “𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐆𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐟: 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐆𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐟 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐨𝐬𝐬” offers a gentle opportunity to connect with nature, reflection, and community while navigating grief and loss together.

We’re grateful to Alberta Parks and Mount Royal University for continuing to support this meaningful program and the compassionate care work happening in our community.

Caregiving can be meaningful, rewarding, exhausting, emotional — and sometimes overwhelming all at once.

Whether you are supporting a parent, partner, friend, or family member through illness, you are not alone.

We recently came across this helpful resource from Canadian Virtual Hospice called CaregiversCan, filled with practical information, guidance, and support for caregivers navigating different stages of the journey.

Sometimes even small reminders, tools, or words of support can make a difference along the way.

Sometimes grief comes quietly in the form of a wagging tail, a favourite spot on the couch, or the silence left behind after losing a beloved pet. 💛

We appreciated this thoughtful post shared by The Children's Grief Foundation of Canada, reminding us how important honesty, patience, and connection can be when supporting children through pet loss.

At Bow Valley Palliative, we believe every grief journey matters — including the ones that are sometimes overlooked. Small conversations, shared memories, and simply being present for one another can make a meaningful difference.

Because grief comes in many forms, and no one should have to carry it alone.

This National Nursing Week, we’re proud to join the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA-AIIC) campaign celebrating The Power of Nurses to Transform Health. 💙

Over the past few days, we had the opportunity to visit nurses across the Bow Valley with small appreciation bags as a thank you for the care, compassion, and strength they bring to our community every day.

This photo was taken with the Acute Care nursing team at Canmore General Hospital during our visits to Canmore General Hospital, Bow River Lodge, Banff Mineral Springs Hospital, and Origin at Spring Creek.

Thank you to all nurses for the incredible difference you make in people’s lives — today and every day. 💛
