Dear Friends of Hearts and Hands,

Life certainly has twists and turns! It has been two months since my last update when I informed everyone that I was retiring. In my wildest dreams I never imagined the response I would receive. Many individuals expressed their understanding and congratulations for a job well done. However, those voices were far outnumbered by the voices that appealed to me to not retire. Expressions of the great work we have done and are still doing were overwhelming.

When we are so busy getting the work accomplished, sometimes we fail to see the impact we are making. That impact became obvious through the pleas from staff, families, students, mayors, past volunteers, and board members to keep going. The response to these pleas required me to thoroughly re-think my next steps.

As I wrote in the last update, my hope is for Corazones y Manos to become independent and continue our work in Guatemala. I know that is possible primarily through the abilities of the staff, and secondly through the alliances and partnerships we have created in 20 years. Fortunately, I believe these sources will remain with or without my participation. I can say with pride these relationships were created through trust, reliability, and sustainability.

I know it will take hard work and time for Corazones y Manos to become an independent charity continuing my dream. However, when that becomes a reality, I can exit with a clear conscience that Corazones y Manos is an entity in itself, functioning well, and still impacting the families of Guatemala.

In closing, I hope all of you who read this update understand my dilemma. I cannot ignore the pleas, and I must be able to retire with peace of mind that Corazones y Manos is independent.

Best wishes,
Jan Townsend, Founder

Our Story

In 2001, our founder Janet Townsend, a retired social worker, decided she wanted to make a real difference to the world in a meaningful way. Her love of the Mayan culture in Central and South America led her to work in Guatemala with the Mayan people in the areas of health and education.

Jan set out to form teams of like-minded, adventurous people seeking the challenge of helping others in a different culture while learning about that culture. In 2005, the Hearts & Hands Foundation was registered as a charitable society based in Canmore, Alberta in Canada’s Rocky Mountains.

Our mission is to enhance the quality of life of the Mayan people through sustainable programs in health and wellness, infrastructure, and education. Programs delivered by volunteers and Guatemalans ensure cross-cultural understanding and promote mutual respect.
