Biosphere Institute of the Bow Valley

Biosphere Institute of the Bow Valley The Biosphere Institute is a non-profit charitable organization supported through the voluntary contributions from a variety of sponsors.

Mission: The Biosphere Institute of the Bow Valley empowers community leadership on environmental challenges. Our current work addresses two major challenges affecting the Bow Valley:
human-wildlife coexistence and climate change. Our efforts include three core programs: the WildSmart Community Program, Bow Valley Shift: Climate Transitions program, and Future Leaders youth education program. We

also serve as a community hub where citizens can access local environmental information, learn about how to get involved in conservation programs, and build ideas for new community-led initiatives.

We have officially helped to keep 2,049 pounds of materials circulating in the community!
🏡♻️🧡

ReUse Bow Valley is a community focused project dedicated to sharing, reusing, and redistributing materials from construction, renovation, and demolition projects. It aims to help keep useful materials out of the landfill and support a more circular economy in the Bow Valley.

We are so stoked to be able to share this news with you all, and can't wait to see how the ReUse project will continue to grow and thrive!

Community Highlight đź’š

Why reuse?

We were so excited to see these carpet tiles from the Reuse Hub transformed into this cozy garage hangout space right here in Canmore. Instead of heading to the landfill, they found a second life and helped create a warm, inviting space to watch last night’s World Cup game from!

Planning a renovation or DIY project? Stop by the Reuse Hub on Thursdays, Saturdays, or Sundays to discover reclaimed building materials and give something great another chance to shine.

Want to be highlighted? Submit your story or project for a chance to win $100! Every item reused means less waste and more resources staying in our community. ♻️

Daniel Levesque has been a part of the circular economy in Canmore for at least 37 years, and he’s great person to talk to if you ever need to know why reusing as much as possible is mutually beneficial for both our community, and the environment.

His business-Mountain Electronic Services-has been operating since 1988, “fixing all kind”. From an electric piano he found in a local dumpster, to a well loved vacuum cleaner and a barely broken printer he salvaged from the recycling centre, Daniel has made it his responsibility to keep discarded products from making it to their final resting place.

At the ReUse hub, we try and do the same, only with CRD (construction, renovation and demolition) materials.

Despite the difference in items, we value the same things:

1. Keeping great items with a lot of life left OUT of the landfill.
2. Addressing the affordability crisis by making some material resources in the community much more accessible.

If you value those things too, stop by the ReUse Hub, join the community on Facebook, or volunteer with us!

There’s probably not an exact equation to re-create the great day we had building community resiliency against wildfire. But we can tell you about three things that help a ton:

-a motivated volunteer to become your FireSmart Neighborhood Champion (this community has Ken, maybe you or someone you know is the right person for your neighbourhood!)

-some tools that are FREE to borrow from the Biosphere

-and a great group of community members!

Oh, and a delicious barbecue is a HUGE bonus!

Visit the biosphere website (link in bio) or Firesmartcanada.ca to learn more about becoming a community!
