As the grand finale of the Living Legacy Project, the Haig-Brown Memorial Lecture marks a powerful return to the roots of a remarkable family legacy. On May 3, which happens to be Ann Haig-Brown Day, you are invited to join Celia Haig-Brown in conversation with her brother, Alan Haig-Brown, in a deeply personal and poignant dialogue. This session brings the entire series full circle, as it celebrates the Haig-Brown family's enduring connection to Campbell River and the surrounding landscape.

The day feels especially significant for Alan, as he returns to the place and rivers of his birth. In this intimate setting, Alan will read from and discuss his newly completed book, "White Boy Goes Fishing". The book opens with stories of lessons learned from his late father-in-law, Herb Assu, during the decade Alan spent working on the Assu family seine boat. This transformative experience, he says, was the beginning of his multifaceted career in publishing, writing, and photography, with a focus on commercial fishing and the broader marine industry. Alan’s journey is a testament to the unexpected intersections of family, identity, and vocation.

Presented in Partnership with the Campbell River Arts Council.
Tickets $12 available on the Museum website and at the door.
May 3 from 1pm to 3pm at the Vineyard Christian Fellowship (the blue church across the street from the Haig-Brown House).

Writing is more than just putting words on a page—it's about re-searching, looking deeper, and finding the right words to capture the world around us. Whether you're working on a story, essay, poem, or film script, it's curiosity that drives us. In this hands-on workshop on Saturday, April 5, join us for a deep dive into the process of re-searching your writing ideas, from conception to creation. Just $55 for registration - includes lunch! More details can be found on the Museum at Campbell River website.

What to Expect:
Celia Haig-Brown, Professor Emerita and Senior Scholar at York University, will lead the session, bringing decades of experience researching with Indigenous communities and women in rodeo production. Celia will share insights into respectful research, guiding participants from the early sparks of an idea all the way to the potential creation of a lasting archive. Whether you're a writer, reader, educator, or just curious about research in writing, come prepared to explore your projects, ask questions, and dig deeper.

In the second half of the workshop, Celia will be joined by Ann Cvetkovich, a writer and professor of gender and sexuality studies, who will lead creative writing exercises inspired by Celia's own work. Together, they'll help you generate fresh ideas for telling powerful stories about family, community, and local history. Ann’s perspective is informed by her expertise in oral history, trauma, and personal narrative—drawing on Celia’s research as a foundation for developing your own storytelling practices.
Also present will be Valerie Haig-Brown, a writer, editor, and daughter of Roderick and Ann Haig-Brown, who will share her experience publishing works by her late father, as well as her own book, Deep Currents, which draws on letters from her parents.

Celia Haig-Brown, the youngest of the Haig-Brown children, has returned to her home river, house, and community that shaped her. In conversations with Indigenous writers, artists, and other Haig-Brown family members, she reflects on the lasting impact of the lessons passed down from her parents, Roderick and Ann Haig-Brown.

Four community sessions and a workshop will invite the public to join the dialogue using art and conversation. Each session will offer a chance for speakers and audience members to examine what it means “To be in good relation.”

The series of conversations draws on the “Four Rs” proposed by Verna J. Kirkness and Ray Barnhardt. Using each of the Four Rs (Relevance, Reciprocity, Responsibility and lastly Return), sessions will focus on practical ways to work well together. The first session will use the theme of relevance to examine what it means “to be in good relation.” The second session will focus on reciprocity, the third, responsibility, and the fourth, return. Underlying all of them will be how to work with respect.

Celia especially thanks Verna Kirkness (Cree), Jo-ann Archibald (Sto:lo), Kaaren Dannenmann (Aniisinaabe), Ruth Green (Haudenosaunee), and the students and staff of UBC’s Indigenous Teacher Education Program (NITEP) as some of the many who have shared Indigenous knowledge that informs these sessions. Each session will include time for Q&A with the audience.

The first of these four conversations takes place at the Museum at Campbell River on Saturday, January 25. Tickets $12 and available through the Museum or Haig-Brown websites.
