Here's the thing. When the provincial government cancelled the 2025 intakes for the Community Housing Fund and "delayed" the Indigenous Housing Fund, it stalled thousands of units and put significant strain on the community housing sector.

Many municipalities and organizations had already invested millions in projects to get them shovel-ready.

The community housing sector is shaken, organizations are strained, and advanced projects are stalled.

The downstream impact of this decision, including potential increased costs as more individuals and families fall into housing hardship, is difficult to assess.

Housing systems are already strained. Youth, families, and seniors are already struggling. Supportive services and housing providers are burning out with the level of need and many are struggling to keep programs operational due to funding cuts. This causes burnout from the front line to senior management.

And these are the people and organizations who are trying to hold back the floodgates of hardship and homelessness. Without them, the impact would be felt across communities.

BC urgently needs housing solutions.

A couple of weeks ago, we got to spend time with Phoenix Middle School, Campbell River School District - SD72, to discuss the social determinants of health.

Students learned about the intersection between determinants, such as how your income level impacts your transportation, food security, community/social activities, housing, healthcare, and more.

Students were invited to play a budget game to see if they could afford to live as a renter off of a minimum wage full-time job. They shared their creative ideas about how to save costs - such as choosing to have roommates or choosing active transportation over having a car.

Students also learned about local organizations who can help youth and families who are struggling with the social determinants.

Hey friends, the Salvation Army in Campbell River is trying to get their dinner program off the ground. They need your help!

This dinner service will be available to those who are housed or unhoused and have limited access to food security. This is somewhat of a "replacement" service for the former Hama?elas Community Kitchen who lost their home in July of last year.

Good morning, Campbell River. We would like to offer an update as to the Community Dinner Program.

First, The Salvation Army is truly excited to be entering into a partnership with you, the community, Laichwiltach Family Life Society, and the City of Campbell River. All the stakeholders are passionate about a sustainable, long-term, and meaningful approach to meeting the needs of our people. It has been eight weeks since the official announcement was made, and since then we have been putting things in place.

We have been working closely with Laichwiltach Family Life Society, and the City of Campbell River to finalize the Funding Agreements. As of last week, these agreements have been signed and are now in place. Funding will begin only when the program starts. Also, during this time the team at the Centre of Hope have been working on the details of an expanded menu.

The final piece? The people! We are now actively looking for a Community Ministry Supervisor if you click the link it will take you to the posting on “Indeed.”https://ca.indeed.com/viewjob?jk=7638693c8618363d&from=shareddesktop_copy Next week, we begin the search for a cook to walk alongside Debbie, our Food Service Coordinator. As these posts become available, please help us by sharing.

Finally, the dedicated volunteers! This initiative will only be successful if our community volunteers come alongside. The elephant in the room? The “Volunteer Package” which seems a little heavy. At The Salvation Army, the safety and wellbeing of our guests, volunteers, and employees is of the utmost importance. The volunteer package is key to ensuring we are all working together, in a safe caring manner.

Currently, we have twenty confirmed volunteers. In fact, this week one group of volunteers formed a five-person team and have committed to the last Thursday of each month. They are even considering a team name – “Cupbearers”. We are looking for 20 – 25, five-person teams to serve on a regular basis. Currently, we are building the teams and filling the schedule for the next twelve months. Next week, we will launch a tool where you can sign up online, get reminders, etc. If all the people components fall into place we hope to launch the Dinner Program on 15 June 2026.

Wow! We had such a great time at the inaugural Campbell River Housing Symposium.

Our sold-out event had 144 people discussing housing and services in Campbell River and region.

We heard from speakers across BC about the current housing climate, innovative partnerships and funding for non-market and affordable housing development, and how to make projects succeed.

For anyone who needs a place to warm up tonight.

🌡️ In response to low overnight temperatures and winter weather in the forecast, the City will open a warming centre at the Campbell River Community Centre (401-11th Avenue) on Monday, February 16, 2026.

📅 The City’s warming centre will be open from 10 p.m. on Monday, February 16 until 7 a.m. the following morning.

Everyone is welcome to stop by and warm up. Visitors may bring pets on leashes and belongings, including bikes and carts. Bikes and carts will be stored in an outdoor area. 🚴 🐾 Hot drinks, snacks and seating will be available. ☕️

Many people help to make the warming centre possible. Thank you to everyone involved for their dedication to supporting neighbours and vulnerable residents during cold weather events.🤝

Funding for the warming centre is provided by the Province through Emergency Management Climate Readiness, with additional support from the City.

2026 Cortes Housing Survey

Two years ago we worked with Cortes Island's Regional Director, Mark Vonesch, to create a housing survey to help us understand the challenges that people face, the reality of housing on Cortes, and how our local government and housing society can have a positive impact.

The information we collected helped us take action and provided direction for our work. We learned that 19% of Cortes respondents don't have laundry, 12% don't have bathing facilities and 30% don't have an indoor toilet. That information was critical in helping us to prioritize adding community laundry, shower and toilet facility in the Rainbow Ridge Community Building.

We are now releasing a new survey with some additional questions to see how much has changed in the past two years and help steer our work moving forward. Please take a few minutes to fill it out if you live on Cortes as a renter or property owner. Whether you need housing or not, your voice matters and we'd like to hear from you.
