We stand with Pallium Canada in calling for a National Palliative Care Training Standard for Long-Term Care.

Every long-term care resident deserves compassionate, high-quality care that reflects their goals, comfort, and dignity. Supporting frontline workers with accessible, role-based palliative care training will help strengthen workforce confidence, improve resident and family experience, and support better outcomes across Canada’s long-term care system.

A coordinated national standard would help ensure long-term care providers across Canada have access to the training, tools and workforce support needed to provide compassionate care when it matters most.

Palliative care is not only about end-of-life care. It is about improving quality of life, supporting dignity, and ensuring long-term care residents and families receive compassionate care.

That is why we are proud to join Pallium Canada in calling for a National Palliative Care Training Standard for Long-Term Care to help strengthen palliative care training and workforce support across Canada’s long-term care sector.

CSA Group’s survey revealed that only 35% of older adults (65+) are confident that Canada’s healthcare system will be able to meet the needs of an aging population in 2040; even fewer (25%) feel that the government will be able to ensure appropriate housing options for older adults. The CSA Public Policy Centre’s report https://bit.ly/4t1kdXh uses survey data and foresight analysis to explore what the future of aging might look like in 2040 and provides policy recommendations that can help Canada create a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable future.

Personal support workers (PSWs) are critical in helping older adults, people living with disabilities, and those recovering from illness or injury live safely, independently, and with enjoyment. However, many PSWs are leaving the profession, citing difficult working conditions, lack of access to training, and low wages, which impact their mental health and ability to perform their jobs confidently. The report “Revaluing Personal Support Work in Canada” https://bit.ly/4bV6ZFB from the CSA Public Policy Centre explores policy pathways that can help improve the working lives of PSWs and increase their recruitment and retention.
