Welcome to the W: a Collective Space for Women, Girls, Gender-diverse and Two-Spirit People.

The W, operated through YWCA Cambridge is home to our pre-employment program (Small Steps To Success) and our youth programs for cis and trans girls, non-binary and two-spirit youth (STEPS, SHYFT, TechGyrls, STEM Mentoring & GLOW) Operated by YWCA Cambridge, this space is the home to our Employment Programs (Small Steps to Success & Uplift) and Youth Programs (SHYFT, TechGyrls & Where I Stand). The W provides free, participant-led programming for cis and trans women and girls, gender-diverse and Two-Spirit people.

What a powerful evening of courage, connection, and community.

We’re especially grateful to the incredible youth, whose leadership and vision were at the heart of this year’s Take Back the Night. From leading the rally and march to sharing their voices, they reminded us of the power young people have to inspire change. We are so proud of them!

Thank you to our community partners, rally speakers, Feminist Night Market vendors, and everyone who showed up in solidarity. Your presence and commitment helped make the event stronger and more meaningful.

📱 VIOLENCE DOESN’T STOP WHEN WE GO ONLINE.

Our digital lives are part of our everyday lives — and gender-based violence can happen there too.

Technology-facilitated gender-based violence can include things like:

• online harassment and threats
• unwanted sexual images or messages
• stalking or tracking through technology
• sharing intimate images without consent
• impersonation
• digital surveillance
• coercion and control through phones, apps and social media

These experiences aren’t “just online.” They can affect people’s safety, relationships, mental wellbeing, education, work and ability to participate freely in their communities.

Canada’s latest data found that almost 1 in 3 young women and girls aged 15–24 experienced unwanted behaviours online in the previous year.

In 2026, taking back the night also means asking:

Who gets to feel safe online?
Who gets to speak without being threatened?
Who gets to exist without being watched, harassed or targeted?

Our streets matter.

Our schools matter.

Our workplaces matter.

Our digital spaces matter too.

We aren’t asking people to be braver. We’re asking for communities to be safer.

People who experience gender-based violence are too often told to change how they dress, where they go, who they trust or how carefully they move through the world.

But preventing violence isn’t about asking those at risk to do more to protect themselves.

It’s about changing the conditions that allow violence to happen.

Most sexual violence is perpetrated by men and boys. That means men and boys have an important role to play — not just in not causing harm, but in challenging harmful attitudes, speaking up when they see disrespect, modelling consent and helping create a culture where violence is never excused or normalized.

This is a call to all of us, including men and boys. Join us on September 17 and be part of the change.

Together, we march for safer communities, schools, workplaces, streets and digital spaces — and for a future where everyone can live without fear of gender-based violence.

Safety isn’t something people should have to earn. It’s something we all have a responsibility to build. 🌙

WHY ARE WE STILL MARCHING IN 2026?

Because sexual and gender-based violence hasn’t disappeared.

In Canada, women and gender-diverse individuals continue to experience high rates of sexual assault and intimate-partner violence. Young women, girls and gender-diverse individuals also continue to experience higher rates of unwanted sexual behaviours — including online.

And here in our own community, recent high-profile sexual violence proceedings have reminded us how complicated, painful and difficult the pursuit of accountability can be for survivors and communities.

We march because awareness matters.

We march because survivors deserve to be believed, supported and treated with dignity.

We march because prevention requires all of us.

We march because safety should not be seen as something we earn by being careful enough.

And we march because we want something better.

A community where consent is understood.
Where boundaries are respected.
Where survivors are supported.
Where young people have a voice.
Where everyone can move through public and digital spaces without fear.

That’s why we’re still taking back the night.

🌙 WHY DO WE STILL TAKE BACK THE NIGHT?

Because this movement has always been about more than one night.

Take Back the Night grew out of feminist organizing in the 1970s, as women came together to challenge sexual violence and the idea that women should have to change their lives, movements and behaviour to avoid being harmed.

The movement spread across communities, campuses and countries — including here in Canada.

Decades later, we continue to march because the right to feel safe walking home, going to work, going to school, meeting friends, using public transit, attending a concert or simply existing in public spaces should never depend on how carefully we protect ourselves from someone else’s violence.

The movement has changed. Our communities have changed. The ways violence happens have changed.

But the need to speak out, organize and stand together remains.

On September 17, we march together.
